Perfect product - if your needs match... May 2, 2008 The Silex SX-5000U2 is an excellent product that allows me to share my Canon multi-function printer/scanner/copier (the MP530) and a Maxtor one-touch FAT32-formatted hard drive over my network with NO hiccups what-so-ever.
NOTE that many people have varying degrees of success with the product, because not everything appears to be compatible with it.
I was fortunate in that I read those reviews and then corresponded, by email, with Silex to make sure that I had devices that are compatible. The Silex support personnel responded quickly and with accurate information.
My setup therefore works great!
I recommend that if you are interested in this product you either contact Silex FIRST to make sure what you have will work with it -OR- tailor your setup by purchasing stuff that is known-compatible with the device. But keep in mind that the 5000U2 supports much more than what is presently listed at the Silex site. Hence, it is really best to contact Silex support if there is any question.
The set up was easy, even though, at the time I set mine up there was no Vista-compatible documentation, even though there ARE Vista drivers.
It works GREAT!
Works with MP530 All-in-one, but... November 19, 2007 I purchased the SX-5000U2 to scan images from the printer to any machine on the network. I had two printers - an old HP all-in-one Officejet k80, and a newer Canon MP530. Setting the SX-5000U2 up was a breeze. All the documentation is available online, and the instructions were easy to follow. Their support was also helpful for answering questions. The MP530 was found immediately, both for printing and scanning. It actually works great! However, the K80 printer was not discovered for printing, and the K80 scanner was not discovered until the MP530 was disconnected. This meant I couldn't use the MP530 and K80 scanner at the same time. Not a big issue, but was unexpected. The one big limitation is the SX-5000U2 only supports 4 FAT partitions on one drive, since NTFS is not supported. This means, if you plug a drive into the SX-5000U2, only 120MB can be accessed. This meant I couldn't use my 250GB drive as I had hoped. I also could not get my IOGear Portable USB drive working. For some reason, the status light on the SX-5000U2 kept flashing, which meant the drive was not properly detected. I presume the SX-5000U2 was not supplying enough power for the drive to function correctly, since the drive does not it's own power supply (I still need to contact support). One item that I still don't have working, is the ability to print and access files from anywhere across the internet. I haven't had time to research this further, and support could not provide the answers (they knew of hacks, but could not tell me). Overall, the SX-5000U2 is a cool idea, but needs further functionality to be completely useful.
Works well to share Canon multifunction in small office environment August 21, 2007 I purchased this product to share a Canon MP530 multifunction printer/scanner/fax (which has USB interface only) on our small company's network. We needed to share both the printing and scanning functions. Setup went fairly smoothly with one call to Silex tech support to help with a few settings. I must say their tech support was the most accessible tech support I've ever encountered, support technician answered my call right away and was very helpful. Once set up, the SX-5000U2 shows up on our network as a PC with shared printer (Windows sees it that way), making it very easy to install the printer on all other PCs with no special client software required. Printing works great with no problems sharing the printer amongst all. For scanning, a client utility must be installed on the PC of anyone wishing to have access to the scanner, it resides in Windows system tray and seems to be very reliable - no problems accessing and using the scanner. We are very satisfied with this product.
Complicated to install but works great September 16, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this to connect two home computers to two network printers. The installation is complicated and the setup guide is not very helpful. I was a little worried about technical support because Silex is not exactly a household name and I wasn't sure who or what I'd get on the phone. But I have to say the technical support was awesome. Ben, the service representative, actually took over remote control of my computer. Don't ask me how he did it, but he had the device up and running in no time. The connection is super fast and everything is working great going on two weeks. I would highly recommend this device based on how it works and the technical support I received.
Silex talks a Good Game February 12, 2006 From the product description this sounds like the holy grail. My USB bus is overloaded so I thought I would defer some of that load onto this. So I forked over the 2 hundy. After a week of trying to get the $*&*% to work, I returned it. The instructions were not simple, but pretty convoluted, and I am a geek! It refused to be recognized by the network and the device refused to even reset according to the instructions. And the instructions kept making sure I knew I was the idiot screwing up the process. The support was not toll-free and only during business hours. The online knowledge base was non-existant. So I refused to be abused for 200 any longer, that was more than I paid for my frickin top of the line Wireless N router that works easily and perfectly. No more Silex ANYTHING for me. I am buying an HP print server for my HP printer because they just plain work. I will look into other solutions for my scanner.
