4 out of 5 stars Good in the office, less good on the plane   October 12, 2008
These headphones work very well for my purposes, but they won't satisfy everyone. Audio quality is good, but not great: compared to the open, clean sound of a pair of Grados these sound a little muffled and muddy. For my needs, the noise cancellation is great: window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, office ventilation systems are all virtually inaudible with the noise cancellation switched on. I've only used the headphones on airplanes a couple of times, and found them less satisfactory there. The QuietPoints help a lot, and jazz and rock are clearly audible. But quiet passages in classical music are still hard to hear, even with much of the plane's background hum cancelled out.

3 out of 5 stars great sound but hurts my ears   October 12, 2008
As other reviewers have described, the sound quality is great for the price. But I find the headset uncomfortable after just a few minutes. I don't think my ears are unusually large, but they get crunched uncomfortably by the headset, enough that I don't really want to keep it on for more than an hour.

4 out of 5 stars Great value, subpar airline adapter.   October 9, 2008
Just flew from Copenhagen to Austin on two Continental flights with a friend who has the Bose QuietComfort 3 headphones, so we did a little comparing.

Audio quality is good on both, no question there.

Noise-reduction was pretty equal, perhaps with a slight edge to the Bose 'phones which were able to better cancel a certian low-frequency engine roar.

While listening to the airplane's entertainment system on with AT's, there was a rather loud tinnitus-like sound. The Bose set didn't have the sound. We were able to narrow down the cause of this difference to the airline adapters. The airline adapter of the Bose set apparently has a built-in noise reduction feature. While using the Bose airline adapter with the AT headphones, the noise was gone.

I might get an aftermarket airline adapter for my AT's if airline entertainment system noise turns out to be common problem. The sound wasn't volume sensitive, so I was able to drown it out (or at least forget about it) by turning up the volume a notch.

Another difference is the Bose set's active noise cancellation seems to exert more pressure on the eardrum. On the AT set, this is hardly noticable.

My friend was uncomfortable wearing my AT's because his ears are large enough to get squeezed slightly by the rather small earcups. This isn't a problem for me.

5 out of 5 stars Good for what you get and one other benefit   October 9, 2008
WEll made. Also, the use of a removable plug cord and not just jack (that yoiu can replace if it gets damaged without paying for new headphones which I've had to do with other products) makes perfect sense. Not only did this product do what it said (not all products do!), but it had one added benefit. I had problems hearing some of the movies on my ipod. When you turn on the noise-cancelling function, the volume increases on the movies as if an amplifier kicked up the volume about 15%. It's a nice addition to a good product.

1 out of 5 stars Not for me   October 8, 2008
I bought these and tried them over several days. Not for me, I'm afraid. First, they are really uncomfortable. They simply cannot be adjusted to your ears or, dare I say it, to the shape of your head. The sound with the noise canceling off is simply terrible. With the noise canceling on, the sound is better, but nothing to shout about. Nonetheless, what bothers me most is the simple discomfort of these headphones. They do not adjust to your ears. Ultimately, they're simply uncomfortable.
