Product Description The BestData Smart One 56K Windows modem is designed to work exclusively with the Window Operating System and provide outstanding value and reliable operations at an affordable price. It supports the V.92 technology as well as V.44 compression. This is in addition to V.90 technology currently supported by all Internet service providers. That means it's fast, easy to install and use. With the V.92 56K modem you get it all! Faster Web browsing. Faster Internet access. Faster connect speeds.

Avoid Best Data like the plague October 31, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'd bought this modem a couple of years ago due to the price and rebate, thinking it'd be good to have one in reserve. Installed it in my new P-IV ECS system (XP-MCE; 3 GB w/1 MB RAM). Upon installation after adding it after getting system running well w/ DSL, its installation did not succeed w/ the installation software. I let Windows handle it, but then had two listed modems and a "v92" "control panel" that was supposedly intended for this model . It stops working when another PCI card is added and requires major efforts to coax it into working. I upgraded the board drivers and what can be found at Best Data site for upgraded drivers (w/out any real info. on how). After it last quit working I gave up and went and bought a Hayes (Zoom). This was not my first Best Data modem (this was my third); but I shall NEVER buy another product from BD. ALWAYS, the configuration was somewhat problematic, as I recall. IN my experience, you'll also get higher connection speeds with another manufacturer. In fact, the similar model A56FW as a 56k unit was not much of an improvement over the 28.8k model it was to replace. In any case, I guess I'll keep it around in case someone is running some older OS and needs one, but it won't be in one of my machines. SAVE yourself some trouble. You might also prefer a model (non-HSP) that doesn't resort to software to handle the communications.
Terrible Product & Awful Phone Svc..Extremely Dissatisfied February 4, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Installed this modem on Monday and it didn't work. Error msg says, "Hardware does not support modem". I tried every troubleshooting suggestions. Still didn't work. Mind you, my computer has Windows 98 is barebone where there are no other programs that could interfere with it. The packaging says that this modem works for all Windows OS. Their technical support line is available ONLY 8-4pm PST. I took Tuesday off work in order to call them. I was on hold for at least 1 hour. I spoke w/a rep and clearly the product is defective because they have to send me another disk to supposedly fix the problem. The rep told me that since I called them early in the day and that I also reside in California, I would receive the disk later that day or next day. Now it's Thursday and I have yet to recieve the disk to fix the problem of their defective product. I am currently on the phone on hold for 45 minutes and counting trying to find what the heck is going on.
The packaging claims that it would only take a few minutes to install and internet access is immediate. I purchased this item on Monday and now it's Thursday and I don't when I can go online. What a hassle and great waste of my time.
Besides the Better Business Bureau, where else can I file a complaint against this company so that others won't go through the same I am going through?
No problems at all!! February 2, 2005 Great Modem--Had no trouble installing at all. Works perfectly in XP--It even shows incoming calls. It is a must buy! I don't understand why others find it difficult~
Avoid this modem August 20, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I recently spent days attempting to install this modem. I was installing it on a new computer and even went to the trouble of re-formatting my computer and installing Windows XP again. Even on a barebones Windows XP install, with no extra, possibly conflicting software, I could not get this modem to work.
Technical support was terrible as well. They did not respond to my e-mails even though they claimed they would in 3-5 business days. Also, I spent hours on hold attempting to talk to somebody and was ultimately unsuccessful.
I purchased a US Robotics V.90-V.92 Internal PCI Faxmodem and had it fully functional in less than 15 minutes.
Worst Modem Ever: Piece of Junk December 25, 2003 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Once installed on a Windows XP computer, it would not connect most of the time, but worse of all it caused interference with my PCI video card. After installation of the modem I received scrambled color output to my monitor that resulted in a green streak down both sides and a red streak across the top. If it did connect, the modem on hold feature could not be disabled (my ISP does not support this feature). All incoming calls would drop all ISP connections. I would not recommend this product to anyone even if you paid me $50.00.
