Product Description Typically, rainbows are associated with rain, but that's all about to change! Let the sun shine in... this Rainbow Maker is solar powered! And big bucks off thanks to a special deal we negotiated. Place it in a sunny window and a solar panel powers the motor that turns the Swarovski crystal. The crystal splits the sun's light into rainbow-colored reflections that cast light around your room. Measures 2 x 1 1/4 x 6" and weighs approx. 2 ozs. Order one, or more, today! Very cool idea...hope I can get another October 19, 2008 I ordered this as a present for my 5 year old daughter. She loves the rainbows but is as disappointed as I am that the gears don't turn.
Reading various sites I learned that these devices are very sensitive -- they don't work in double pained windows, nor with screens. I took mine right outside at noon (no glass between me and the sun!) -- still no movement after an hour of direct "charging".
I have written to the seller, am hoping they will understand. So many people seem to enjoy it right out of the box, that my guess is I just need a replacement (which I hope they will honor since it is more than 30 days since I bought it). I will provide an update.
Rainbow maker July 3, 2008 Got one as a present and I love it, my cat is intrigued by it. Have had many compliments on it. Gave one to a special friend who enjoyed mine.
A bit overpriced but wonderful July 1, 2008 I love this thing. I first bought one at the Museum of Modern Art store in NYC. It was of the 2-crystal variety, and frequently has the problem other reviewers have mentioned with not quite enough juice spinning the gears without turning the pendants. I've since purchased two of the single-crystal variety here on Amazon and they don't seem to share this problem; presumably because one crystal requires less energy to rotate than two.
It's impossible not to love the effect when it's working well - it can utterly transform the feeling of a room. I have one in an east-facing window in my kitchen, and it's delightful to come down in the morning and find the room full of drifting rainbows.
very lovely June 10, 2008 it works great, if you have windows that do not have solar shield on them. I have triple insulated windows, with solar shield, so it doesn't move, but when I put it on the outside of the window it worked perfectly, and I enjoy the rainbows all over the porch.
Beautiful and entertaining! April 29, 2008 The Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker combines two attributes of a novelty item - it is both interesting and beautiful! The suction cup holds it easily in a window where any sun causes the prism to rotate, casting small rainbows around the room. I'm a high school teacher, and my students enjoy seeing this item in the window.
