 File Cabinet? Good luck actually getting files in... April 5, 2008

I loved the look of this "file cabinet" that could pass for furniture. The disappointing thing is that I've had it for more than a month and still cannot put files in it. It has no file 'frame' for hanging files to set on- and I haven't yet found a frame that will fit it. The drawers are about 13 inches deep, and the shortest frame I've found so far is 14". There are some rods included with the drawers- which I'm guessing they meant for us to use as the rods for the frame- but those don't fit any of the frames I've tried so far. Pretty drawers- not sure how long they'll last, but hard to use as file drawers unless you can make the internal file frame yourself...

While certainly a looker, this file cabinet suffers from some major issues, which I can only attribute to ultra-cheap construction.
Long-term, this cabinet's performance will be impacted by the cheap sliding mechanism for the drawers. The flimsy rails and the plastic wheels give it a rather rickety feel; the drawers "catch" when trying to slide out or in, and squeak. The wooden components inside the cabinet also have a cheap, flimsy feel about them.
Short-term, the absolutely WORST aspect is the paint. This cabinet is covered in leather, but its color appears to be spray-painted on. (And no, it doesn't have the sort of "worn" patina that it appears to have on the pictures posted here; the color is quite uniform all over.) Incidentally, on my particular unit the painter missed a spot on the inside of the handle on the top drawer; the cheap pink plastic of which the handle is made can be seen at that spot. But whatever the paint they use, it's got to be the cheapest, most toxic thing they could have dug up. When I first opened the box, my eyes literally watered and my throat burned from the noxious chemical fumes. I have left both drawers open, and all my windows open, for several weeks now, but the stench still lingers around the cabinet (though it appears to be very SLOWLY wearing off.) I swear, this thing is like some sneak chemical attack from China. Unbelievable...

I am sure that once I get this item I will love it, but it is not in stock until August. I have notified Amazon of this, but I see that it still says that it is in stock. I have requested a refund for the $19.95 processing fee which makes this item more expensive than ordering it directly from Home Decorators. They designate on their website that it is out of stock. Home Decorators has offered a discount on the next purchase, but I don't know if I will place another purchase from them. Amazon has offered a refund for the processing fee, but I have to wait a couple weeks to see if it goes through. So the verdict is not in on this one!

Very unique. I was very happy with this piece. I wanted something a little different from the ordinary and this was perfect. I ordered the brown and I love it. My only issue is the smell (mothballs maybe??) Hope that fades soon. Great price and fast shipment.
