| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Available in Desert and Forest Camouflage color schemes, the lightweight and compact Petzl Tactikka XP is designed for backcountry hiking and hunting. Equipped with a powerful single LED bulb, three lighting levels, a boost mode and colored wide angle lenses, the high-performing Tactikka XP is ready for adventure. A 1-Watt LED bulb produces a maximum brightness of 40 Lumens. Three standard settings allow you to regulate the length of the beam from 59 feet to a maximum of 114.8 feet. By adjusting the length of the beam, you can maximize efficiency, increasing burn time from 60 hours to 120 hours. For those moments when you need just a bit more power, a convenient Boost mode casts a 164 foot beam for 20 seconds. An additional setting produces a strobe light for emergency signaling. A hinge on the housing of the Tikka XP enables you to aim the beam where you need it most. You can also adjust the beam from a flood beam for sharp, proximity lighting to a spot beam setting for maximum distance. In addition to the standard clear lens, the Tactikka XP includes red, green and blue filtering lenses. These lenses make the beam less conspicuous and are more conducive to maintaining night vision. The Tactikka XP is powered by three Alkaline AAA batteries (included). With batteries, the Tactikka XP weighs a mere 3.35 ounces. A battery level indicator light warns you when batteries are 70% depleted and again when batteries are 90% depleted. A comfortable, elastic headband allows the Tactikka XP to adjust to fit varied head sizes and even includes an integrated carrier for one of the colored lens options. Water-resistant and suitable for all-weather use, the Petzl Tactikka XP is available in Desert and Forest Camouflage color schemes.

This Petzl lamp is a great product October 7, 2008 I really like this lamp, its bright enough to work in the garage at night, walking the dog (and with mine you really need both hands!) or to use on hunts and even night time rifle matches. The red filter, which is easy to slip into and out of place, is fairly good at preserving your night vision. The housing is rugged and stays in place well, even though it does get heavy on your head after a few hours. Its good at getting just the right angle so you can point your head naturally. Not hot or dark spots, it throws a clean, even white light. Gotta love LEDs.
I do wish that the boost button was lockable, sometimes you just don't have a free hand to hold it on... duh! Half a star off for that.
Batteries don't last nearly as long as the manufacturer claims--another half star. BUT, they last long enough for most activities that you would need a hands free light for. So I still give it four stars.
Overall its a great piece of kit and I'm glad to have one.
Beyond my expectations October 6, 2008 I purchased this headlamp for hiking, hunting and fishing and so far it has exceeded my expectations. I have an older Petzl, with a halogen bulb that uses three AA's and it is much heavier, bulkier and the bigger batteries don't last as long, the old one does have an adjustable beam, but I find the light output on the XP to be more useful for my purposes. Comfort for long periods is also superior on this model. It took me a while to get used to the way the buttons operate, but now they seem natural. I can't tell you the battery life as I am still on the first ones, but I do use it mostly on low power ,which is more than adequate for most purposes. The red lens does cut down light output to much for my taste and I haven't really tried the green and blue yet.
Bright September 20, 2008 Extremely bright, well made.
Not going to be super waterproof, maybe just splashproof/light rain.
The color is more green than brown.
Petzl Tactikka September 18, 2008 Fantastic item, does precisely what it is designed to do....give you a good hands free source of light. It weighs very little, does not leave your neck fatigued and is very functional. Using it for outdoor applications when fishing or hunting it allows both hands to be free and gives a very efficient cover of light. Controls are easy to access and use, the filter being a very user frinedly set up without requiring any complicated operation to activate. The only possible hiccup with the whole purchase related to the postage costs, but I wouldn't count that against the product. An excellent item and I would suggest a must for any outdoor focussed person.
Petzl headlamp September 14, 2008 The headlamp is simple to use and reliable, perfect for hash desert condition. Great item.
