5 out of 5 stars Great road warrior companion   January 30, 2010

Very fast and responsive laptop with expansive battery life. The 1366x768 screen is sharp and very bright too, with much crisper whites than the other 3 LCDs on my desktop. Solid build quality on this and whisper quiet, compared to my Acer Aspire 4530 14inch that this replaced. Total usable capacity on drive shows at 455GB out of the box. I'm not sure whether it's the 4100 processor or Windows 7, but this machine screams compared to my prior Vista laptop with an Athlon X2 dual-core QL-60. Performance with Microsoft Office Beta 10 is also exceptional, with Microsoft Excel opening in milliseconds compared to seconds on the Acer. I'm a suit spending lots of time on planes, and not a gamer--so I can't comment on how it performs in 3D graphics but that's not my use case anymore (unfortunately). They keyboard is a bit cramped--but you quickly get used to it after a few days. And the trade-off for thin and light far outweighs having a much larger keyboard.

The biggest bonus is that my machine did not come with the usual bloatware that plagues most other new laptops, so the out-of-box experience was smooth and painless. For the price, I don't think you can find a better deal: 4GB RAM, Win 7 64 bit, 6+ hour battery life and a half-terabyte hard drive for well under a grand. There may be smaller and faster laptops out there, but not for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my needs   March 12, 2010

I wanted a light laptop that was faster and provided more options than a netbook. I've had this laptop for over two weeks now and already took it on a trip with me. I have read all the reviews of this laptop on Amazon and other sites as well as reviews of similar Toshiba Satellite laptops. I was prepared for some of the problems I have read about but experienced none. The low volume problem that many mentioned is easily fixed by going into the sound settings and making adjustments there. I had no problem using the keyboard or the mousepad. I don't know why some others had complaints. The "fingerprint magnet" issue that is widely mentioned was not as bad as I had expected. So I am satisfied with my new laptop and find that it meets my needs.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd Toshiba-Smaller and Mightier!   February 6, 2010

I just received this laptop a week ago from Amazon. I have a Toshiba Satellite P205 I got in late 2007. It still is going strong BUT it is a beast..17" and heavy. It was fine at first when my time was spent at my home office, but a bear to travel with.

I happened upon this one at a local office supply store and fell for it right away and after much research found that Amazon had the best build out for the best price! EVen better than Toshiba!

My thoughts at 1st were to keep my "beast" going as my home computer and just take this baby on the road..but I think that will be too crazy to keep everything sync'd up over sharing the wireless network.

I was able to quickly set this baby up! I figured out how to do the easy transfer over my wireless network and am almost fully set up on one computer. This computer is very fast and though I was used to a 17" monitor, I have not really felt like I am missing that extra screen. The keyboard is cramped in comparison but I am getting used to it. I do find myself making more typing mistakes. I do find that the bar at the bottom does take a bit more effort to push down but I learned a trick the other day I never learned before. I never realized you could just tap on the mouse pad to go where you wanted to go! I also figured I would be using a mouse anyway. SO I got a logitech lap pad that has a pull out mouse pad that has made this easier to use witha mouse while in my lap!

I did the recommendations for changing the sound options so I didn't have any initial issues with low sound as described in other reviews of similar models. I am downloading the driver update right now as and added measure

I do not miss the optical drive at this point. I almost considered the U models because it had the built in optical drive but that would have been a HUGE trade off in battery life! SO far I have gotten up to 6 hours of battery on this. I could have gone longer but I had to replug in when I was in the middle of doing something that would take longer than what was left. I am lucky to get just over 2 hours of life on "the beast". I bought the Samsung optical drive recommended here when I bought the laptop and that worked great to load software into this. Is small and light enought to go with me on longer trips just in case. I hardly used the drive so I know I made theright choice to choose battery life over built in drive.

I was able to stash this baby in my purse yesterday, go to a client and sit in a marathon meeting for 6 hours without having it plugged in! Huge plus!

I am still getting used to Windows 7 quirks..but so far I am happy with this one. Always liked the toshibas I have owned or worked on in the past. Expecting to LOVE travelling with this one this year and putting the beast to rest! Great price and great little machine so far!

4 out of 5 stars Best Value for your Money   February 8, 2010

As a programmer/webmaster, I am usually upgrading/fixing my old computers for experience. However, after a CCFL (backlight) failure I decided it was finally time to upgrade past my 2gb RAM and eternally failing HP Pavilion; within a week, I had decided from a concatenation of research that the panoply of options available for the new model of the Satellite were definitely worth the amazing price.

At first I may have been wary of the smaller screen size, but after about a day of using it everything suddenly became copasetic. If you are really worried about the size, just get a second monitor for home-use. Also, the dual core on this tiny beast is FAST. And using the Eco mode, I have been able to effectively carry around my laptop for about 48 hours without the battery even coming close to running out, even while using it for about 9 of those hours!

Now it's definitely true that the trackpad has some problems; the simple solution: get an external mouse. All around I am very impressed with the device. Now I just need to find a reasonable way to fill 500gb of hard drive space.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice   February 13, 2010

My laptop seems to have all the same characteristics with a slightly different model number so I am reviewing here. My main computer crashed with a problem that will take weeks to fix so I needed a substitute right away. I bought the Satellite U5O5-S2950 at Wallmart.

First the bad things: It has an impact sensor on it that gives a message that it has moved the hard drive to a safe place. Every time I bumped the table leg I got the message. It did not, however, interfere with what I was doing. Once I determined that the hard drive would promptly move back to it working position, I told the computer to not to give me the message any more, solving the problem. The second thing that is driving me crazy it the shiny dark gray on on shiny dark brown keyboard. What with the minimal contrast between the symbols and the background and the glare on the shiny keys, it is nearly impossible to see. I am a hunt and peck typist. I pretty well know where the letters are, but the symbols very hard to find. This is definitely not a computer for a low vision user - or even a user whose vision has any imperfections.

Otherwise the computer is wonderful. It comes with Windows 7. So far I have found no problems with it. It also has Works which is adequate for most needs. I installed Word Perfect Office X4. The Toshiba comes with a trial offer of Microsoft Office. I was unable to configure the new mail program called "Live" to pick up my mail, but my Word Perfect mail program seemed to have no problem.

I have a slight hand tremor, and the touchpad took way to much effort to get the pointer where I wanted it so I got an external mouse. I don't think the touchpad is worse than those of other laptops. There are many slots for peripherals. It comes with a DVD drive. Since my other computer isn't here and doesn't work, I have been unable to test the 'sync" function. Nor have I tried logging in from "hotspots" which I have never done and wish to try.

This computer is barely bigger than the "netbook" type, but it is slim and light weight and more functional than a netbook. Were it not for the low contrast keyboard I would have given it 5 stars.
