 Awesome little laptop September 5, 2008

Wow, love this laptop.
Bought it yesterday (in store not on amazon, but i figure i'd help you guys decide on it).
KEYBOARD, I can actually touch type on this keyboard, i tried out the EEEPC and it's keyboard is so small, you'd have to hunt and peck, i would get very frustrated after a few minutes.
SCREEN, is beautiful, it's big, it's bright, it's sharp. No graininess at all. I like the glossy screen, glares a bit, but looks sharp as hell. The size is perfect for viewing web pages, movies, and my favorite game: Jagged Alliance 2.
CASE, The build quality is great. The laptop feels solid, has a good heft to it without being heavy, and is sized well. The glossy case leads to fingerprints, but still looks great. I mean come on, even the iphone gets fingerprints on it, not a big concern in my book.
CAMERA, works great, picture quality is great, i was expecting a pixilated mess but it was clear and good enough for webcam video.
NOISE & HEAT, Not loud at all, had it transferring files, running video, never really heated up or was loud. I was actually impressed on how quiet it was. Perhaps if i run some CPU heavy processes all the time i would worry but let's face it, hardly anyone is going to encode video or do any cpu heavy applications on this.
TOUCHPAD, The touchpad is accurate enough, though i believe this is the only weak point of the One. The mouse buttons on the side are a pain in the arse, and they are below the level of the track pad, making the button difficult to find sometimes. There is no type of boarder around the track pad so sometimes you'll run off the area. And it's a bit small, this in no way was a deal breaker for me, worse comes to worse if i do mouse heavy things i will just pick up a logitech mx mini mouse or something similar.
POWER BRICK, this is the only qualm i have with the laptop. With such an amazingly small and portable laptop, why would they have such a large bundle of wires for the power brick? It's big and cumbersome and there is really no way to bundle it up efficiently. I wish it were more like the macbook powerbrick, but then again, i wasn't expecting much from such a low priced laptop.
In the end, you have to evaluate how you will use this. If your intent is to fill the void between your home computer, and cell phone, it is an awesome laptop. The great keyboard and screen make it very useful to do everything from web surfing to word processing, You can even fit some ripped movies and games on there. For the price, in the subnotebook market, you get the best bang for your buck.

I just received my Acer with Linux last night and it is amazing. The size, weight, speed and performance are up to par. The white color is not too bad and it does not show smudges as much compared to the blue or other colors.
Buy the linux version for several reasons. It loads faster. Less virus and "blue screen of deaths." It also helps to remove Microsofts monopoly power. But most of all, it is very easy to use. Yes, it is different but once you sit down and spend a few minutes looking around you will realize that it makes you life much easier.
This laptop is ideal for students, working professionals and Older folk who just want email and internet.
It is just so quiet, I could go on and on but I need to get back to work!

BestBuy shows same model for $100 less (though currently sold out online). ASUS has cut wholesale price $75 but there has been no reduction at Amazan. Why?

I've had the white machine "XP" , nice design and every one see this netbook he said he want to buy new one like it. Sleek , fast , clearly screen,Wireless radio good... Just I can say it's oky ,, this first notebook from acer am feeling it's really notebook

First things first: This product is designed for portability over performance. Comparing it to a regular 14" laptop from Dell is a mistake, as they are different classes of product. I must also note that I bought the blue version of this product from a local retail store, but all technical specs are identical between the two versions.
That being said, the Aspire One is an outstanding example of what can be done in the "netbook" category. Despite its diminutive size, the keyboard is easy and comfortable to use, even for somebody with large fingers like myself, and the screen is bright, vivid, clear and easy to read. Performance is hard to precisely gauge, but it feels on-par with one of my old Athlon XP systems: Windows XP starts up in a reasonable amount of time and handles well. Internet applications like messenger services (Pidgin), IRC clients (mIRC) and web browsers (Firefox 3.0) work just fine, and other programs such as word processors, older games and other utilities are just as responsive. Even the audio production programs I use - such Ableton and Reason - run on the AAO, even if not spectacularly well (Reason requires a few tweaks to run adequately fast). The internal fan is nearly silent, and the unit itself doesn't give off an excessive amount of heat.
All that being said, there are a few caveats: The trackpad is small and the button placement is slightly awkward. It's usable, but I found myself using a USB mini-mouse instead. The screen does not look good at any off-angle, and needs to be looked at straight-forward to avoid washout, interfering reflections or the other pitfalls of glossy LCD screens. Battery life is subpar at 2.5 hours, but this is due to the fact that it uses a 3-cell instead of a 6-cell. Upgrading the RAM is possible, but only from 1GB to 1.5GB, since one of the RAM sticks is soldered onto the motherboard; replacing the other stick requires the almost complete disassembly of the unit, which will put many users off from doing so. For 99% of buyers, though, the included 1GB of memory will be adequate.
If you need a high-powered PC or notebook for gaming, photo/video editing, or other such demanding tasks, the Aspire One is not what you're looking for. If you need an extremely portable notebook that can do more basic tasks, the Aspire One is among the best in its class.
