3 out of 5 stars Fun for a while, but....   November 22, 2008
One of the things that has always attracked me to the MAXIS brand is the customization built into their games (i.e. sims 1&2). And while I have enjoyed building unique creatures, placing them into an environment, then running them thru their paces, the game still leaves much to be desired.
There's no real "design" to the creatures, meaning just stick on a part anywhere to gain an ability (like sticking a horn on the creature's behind to gain a "charge" ability.
The controls are ackward, and inconsistant thoughout the game. Can't pan out to get a eagle view, etc.,.
The "special abilities" don't seem to work properly, a foot with a speed rating of 5 still moves like a one, wings don't allow you creature to fly, and so forth.
And last but not least you can create all the creatures in create mode all you want, you still can't seem to play them in the game.
Finally you can't customize your own world, or populate it with your own creatures, so forget about setting up a "theme" or a "plot".
The game is fun, for awhile anyway, but the [...] price tag, the Secure-DDR, coupled with the limitations in the game play just doesn't make this a good buy. Wait a while, in a year of two you maybe able to pick it up for &25 or less...

1 out of 5 stars The DRM is much too invasive for me, I won't be buying this game   November 20, 2008

My husband & kids were looking forward to getting Spore as a Christmas present. Unfortunately due to the invasive nature of the latest SecuROM we won't be buying. I see no point in being required to connect to the internet to play a computer game that isn't played online, besides the kids gaming computer is not connected to the internet.

I'm not at all happy that EA continues to force this DRM on us when according to articles, it hasn't done much to stop the software pirates. All it does is punish the paying customer. So I'll find my family a game that isn't so draconian with it's copyright protection software. The same goes for Sims 3. I've been a long time Sims fan, but if it has this garbage on it I'm not touching it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for for ALL ages   November 19, 2008

Got this for my boyfriend on his 24th birthday. Upon seeing him play it, I loved it too (28 years old). We often play it together, or bicker over who gets to play it solo. My cousins (ages 10 and 13) love it too. Excellent game, lots of fun, adjustable difficulty levels. Just save the game frequently, as it has sporadically crashed twice on our Mac. (FYI, we havent had ANYTHING crash on our Mac, which we have had for one year, so I'm hesitant to think the problem is with the Mac.) Either way, the game is fun and worth the $.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT SUPPORT EA!!!!!   November 19, 2008
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you'll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That's not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached, etc, etc (it has all happened before with another recent EA product, Mass Effect). EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.

I TOTALLY AGGREE!!
