4 out of 5 stars WWI Sub Sim   February 23, 2008

Command a German sub in WWI. Fun game and has a good campaign mode. However, you must have an up to date computer to run it. Many people have experienced low frame rates resulting in choppy game play.

It's the best WWI sub sim game out there, but then it's the only one out there.

3 out of 5 stars Fun...but not the Silent Hunter.   December 28, 2007

SoF is a nice introductory game for Sub Sims. It teaches the basics of navigation, target set-up and torp alignments (your torps never seem to miss). The controls are quite easy to understand and use.
However, don't expect the same level of realism, both in graphics and performance that SH III/IV offers. There is no crew issues with this, running aground/touching bottom will sink you every time. Torp explosions/ship damage is quite basic visually. Plotting/Tracking movement on the navigation board is very basic.
As with the period, all engagements are started from line of sight and done from 10 meters deep or less (Periscope limits). Although the enemy doesn't have sonar, they seem to have an easy time spotting you at <1500 meters. This may be due to the fact that your telegraph antenna is about the same height as the periscope and tends to break the surface in rougher seas. Once spotted, it usually off to the races.
There does seem to be a greater amount of capital ship encounters. Usually on patrol three you start hitting armored cruisers and greater. This does help in keeping this interesting.
If you're looking for a Subsim that doesn't require as much thinking as the SH series, it's a fun "Beer and Pretzel" substitute.
