Buyer beware. Consider Xbox version if possible. No 1080i support. Horrible on-line issues on PS3 version. August 26, 2008
I bought the Collector's Edition because I thought it was a great deal. I hadn't played Madden religiously for a few years.
I was ready to dive back in. I wanted the Xbox version, but the friends that would actually play on-line only owned PS3s. So I gave up the achievement love and got the PS3 version.
I was hesitant because last year's PS3 version ran at a slower frame rate. I did some quick research and I didn't see reports of any differences this year.
Before I called my buddies up, I wanted to try a quick game. I jumped in and started playing like I never stopped playing. The game played almost exactly the same as 3 years ago. I had to get used to the hit stick and such, but it is still pretty much the exact same game. I'm not sure if I liked being good already, or if I wanted more of a learning curve. It was a little odd.
So I fired the PS3 up and that was when the problems started. The game only plays in 720p. My HDTV in my game room is a 40" Sony that only displays 1080i, not 720p. I had thought that after the PS3 launch titles made this mistake, EA and Sony would have fixed the issue. Nope. So there I was, stuck playing in 480i in 4:3 mode on my TV. So the graphics were bland and I couldn't play in widescreen so I couldn't see the whole field. My wide out WRs were off screen.
The Xbox version will play in 1080i on my TV just fine.
I still decided to suck it up, because the only reason I got the PS3 version was to play with buddies who lived in other states.
This is where it got horrible. The PS3 online experience vs. Xbox live is night and day. The PS3 was horrible. It took us forever to get a game going. There was some kind of glitch that kept changing both of our playbooks as we started the game to Chicago's playbook. Also, the only way we could start the damn game was to hit the X button exactly at the same time. We had to synchronize our button pushing. Literally saying to eachother , "ready, one, two, three.hit X". This was so stupid. But it was the only way we could get the game to start.
We had all kinds of problems with my ear piece going in and out. Not sure if it was a Sony thing or EA servers.
Once we got the game going, it was fun. My Raider's beat the Chargers :-)
I will never choose a PS3 version again. It just feels so unpolished.
Sorry, I haven't gotten to the Head Coach part of the package. Also, I saw that the C.E. comes with a version of Madden '93 built in. I loved that year. Just hand off to Barry and hit B all the way down the field.
They Finally Improved it! August 25, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This yeah when I got Madden, I wondered if it would be the same garbage they had been putting out for years with updated rosters and adding or subtracting 1 or 2 features that make the game LESS fun, such as the "passing cone" they had a few years ago that made it unrealistic and cartoonish to watch. However, to my surprise Madden 09 actually made REAL changes. It is finally like watching a football game. There are plenty of stats shown throughout the game so you don't have to keep pausing it and looking at the stats to see how your QB is doing. The best part is the new difficulty level that is tailored to your skills. While not perfect, the more you play they better it gets for the most part. Basically you can have passing offense at all-pro, and have pass defense at pro, or something like that. The gameplay has also made huge strides. Unlike the NCAA game this year, in Madden you don't run like you are high stepping all the time. It actually looks pretty real. Also, shoestring tackles aren't as frequent... if you have an elusive QB and a guy barely touches you, you can actually break loose and make the throw. Also, the passing is more realistic... if you are running backwards and throw a bomb off one foot... it will probably be picked off. Also, for those of you who miss Madden's "words of wisdom" during the game, you are now stuck with Chris Collinsworth who does a pretty good job at making you wish that Madden was commentating again. It is a tough call as to which commentary is more annoying, but at least Madden you can laugh at. By about your third game you play, you will be wishing Madden was back, so it will be interesting to see if he is back next year.
A couple complaints, there is still not TRUE half time show. Instead it is 5 "randomly" picked replays and Madden saying how great the game is (even if it is 42-3). It would be nice if EA would steal the idea from like NFL 2K5 for freaking PS2, where they had Chris Berman sitting in a studio, and talking about the game. No fancy graphics, no bells and whistles, just a half time show and maybe a postgame show. I really don't understand why they don't seem to get this?
All in all it is a great game and MUCH better than the last 4 years or so where it's been little more than screwing with the controls and updating rosters.
3.5 stars! August 18, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Madden 2009 could be the perfect game, but sadly it is still plagued by issues that've existed for the better part of a decade.
I have to begin by admitting that EA has done an admirable job with the overall gameplay and franchise mode despite the flaws. The commentary however stinks. Cris Collinsworth is terribly annoying and Tom Hammond is droll at best. I never thought I would desperately miss John Madden's syllogisms this badly.
As for the gameplay itself, running the ball is still too difficult with halfbacks and too easy with quarterbacks. Receivers can run way out of bounds and return to make the catch, with no penalty being called or issues. You can constantly convert on 4th down, literally 99% of the time if it's within 2-3 yds. Offensive Linemen frequently give up on blocks. Quarterbacks constantly fumble on QB sneaks. There is no long distance passing game either, no matter who your QB or WR is. TE's are still too good. The receiver spotlight feature almost never works. The CPU never seems to miss a field goal. Kicks are almost never blocked, I've only seen one in over 40 games. The volume of problems such as these turns what would be an easy 98 overall rating into a 75 or 80.
The new "fairness feature" is also very controversial. It essential puts a beginner with the Falcons on even footing with an expert player using the all-time 72 Dolphins. The expert player's teammates will randomly fumble, drop passes etc to compensate for the beginner's lack of skill. This is personally offensive to me and robs skilled players of a true advantage. The idea was obviously designed to get more beginners to purchase the game, marketing at its worst.
Franchise mode is apparently unchanged from 2008, but is still excellent. The graphics are good, but not revolutionary. Manual juking and catching is well done. The lead blocking option is also very functional and pretty easy to use. Special Teams are well handled but it's impossible to return kicks for touchdowns. One glaring issue is that kick power is diluted. Kickers with 99 kick power will often come up short on 50 yarders. Edit: I'm referring to ALL-MADDEN level of difficulty in this review.
Overall, this is a good game that falls short because of simple oversights. If enough patches are issued, it could become great.
Rating from a true Maddenologist: Spectacular August 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been with this franchise since the beginning and I can truly say that they have made the gaming evolution complete with this edition. I have been disappointed with the last three editions, but MD 09 makes it worth the wait. Kudos to EA Sports on yet another "smash hit". Oh....and the 20th Anv Ed is worth the extra cash; do not deprive yourself of the additional features.
Overall a really good offering from EA August 14, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am returning to the Madden franchise after taking a few years off so I can't compare to any of the previous next-generation Maddens but I can say this is a very entertaining package. Madden 09 still has the traditional Madden with next-generation graphics. Game play has the traditional ups and downs of older Maddens but the overall game play is fun. (Running the ball is not easy.) The real benefit is getting Head Coach packaged in. I have not spent too much time exploring head coach yet but early reviews sound promising and I saw nothing challange that. Bottem line, two PS3 games for $90 is a deal and I am sure that I will get more than $90 worth of enjoyment out of it.
