Amazon.com Product Review The Lorex CVC-6993P Day and Night Color Camera is a high-quality and reliable camera designed for use in virtually any environment. Ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications, this unit is constructed with a waterproof aluminum housing that has an IP67 protection rating. With a good light sensitivity and a decent resolution, the Lorex CVC-6993P is perfect for security surveillance, or any other situation requiring 24-hour monitoring, in areas that are openly exposed to extremely inclement weather or at times are even under water. This camera utilizes a 0.25-inch color interline-transfer CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensor, with up to 512 by 492 effective picture elements. Built with a 3.6-millimeter fixed lens, the CVC-6993P has a good resolution of 350 horizontal TVL (TV lines). For use during the day this camera has a minimum illumination of one Lux in color, but at night this camera automatically switches to black-and-white and uses its 12 LED (light-emitting diode) emitters to allow a vision range of up to 30 feet in 0.1 Lux lighting. The IP67 (Ingress Protection) rating means this unit has a protection level of six against solid-body ingress, and a protection level of seven against the ingress of water. Six is the top protection level against solid bodies, meaning the CVC-6993P is certified dust proof. Seven is the second highest protection level against water, meaning this unit will protect your camera against the effects of temporary immersion between 15-centimeters and one-meter for up to at least 30 minutes. The CVC-6993P features a built-in electronic auto-iris for automatic light compensation, and has a shutter speed ranging from 1/60 to 1/100,000 of a second. This unit runs on 12-volt DC power, and has an operating temperature of five- to 131-degrees Fahrenheit. Technical Features: - Sensitivity: 1 Lux in color, 0.1 Lux in B/W with LEDs
- Effective pixels: up to 512 x 492
- Protection rating: IP67
- Horizontal resolution: 350 TVL
- Dimensions: approximately 3-inch diameter x 4.75-inch depth
Designed for use under trying circumstances, the Lorex CVC-6993P camera deserves serious consideration as a great addition to any surveillance system subjected to extreme environmental conditions. Quick and easy to install with a standard BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman, RF-type) to RCA video output connector, this Lorex camera comes completely assembled and ready to use and is dependable even in low-light conditions. User's should note that the CCD sensor may become permanently damaged if exposed to long hours of direct sunlight or halogen light, so the camera should not be mounted or pointed directly at the sun or other bright-light sources. Also, while IP68 certified, this camera was not intended for use in salt water or water with chemicals, such as the ocean or a swimming pool. About Surveillance Camera Technical Features Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three Lux would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the Lux level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient. About Surveillance Camera Housings Most video surveillance systems can be deployed for outside use when a proper camera housing is used. Key features for housings are a blower/fan to keep the camera cool in the summer, and a heater for the cold-weather months and to keep the glass from fogging up. Most housings can accept many types of security cameras. An outdoor dome housing is used for external mounting when tamper resistance or pan/tilt functionality is desired. What's in the Box CVC-6993P camera, power supply, 63-foot extension cable, mounting bracket, and RCA/BNC connector.

Problematic from the start November 14, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this camera to add to my existing 6 camera home CCTV system which consist of a 240fps video capture card on a Intel Q6600 equipped CCTV computer.
I purchased two of these units (not from Amazon though their price is better) and so far I had to replace 1 of them twice and the other once so I am dismayed about the long term durability as none have lasted longer than 4 months. Both are used for outdoor use and protected from the rain under my homes eave.
Image resolution for this unit is higher than most cameras under $200 and the resulting image quality is pretty decent however two of the biggest flaws are poor color and aforementioned durability. Color wise this camera really lacks compared to my less expensive cameras and in fact this camera resembles a B&W camera most of the time even though it supposed to switch to night vision B&W mode at night only. Green looks nowhere like green and red does not resemble anything close to red. This has been with all 5 cameras of this brand and I have adjusted the various tone, brightness, and saturation levels to no avail. My other cameras which cost only around $100.0 or so have considerably better color output vs. this unit.
The lens cover slips over the unit and works well and stays on even in windy conditions. The mount leaves little to be desired and I recommend some thread locker on the threads as they tend to come loose and as they are mounted over 20' up in the air it can be a hassle digging out my ladder.
Night mode operates pretty well and can hit the entire cul de sac at night with only a street light illuminating the street. This would be the cameras saving grace however I am still on the hunt for another camera as replacing cameras up on the roof atop a 20' ladder is not what I call exciting or safe and so far I have had to do this 3 times.
I emailed Lorex a few times on my concerns and have yet to receive a reply so as long as your expectations are not too high then you will not be disappointed with the company or product.
I have since supplemented my system with a camera from Wisecomm which I much prefer and so far that unit has held up very nicely with real color reproduction.
PROS Good resolution Nice lens cover Good resolution
CONS Not reliable Very poor color
