Product Description Experience the power of an incredible 18x optical zoom in a 8.1-megapixel camera that fits in the palm of your hand. From vast landscapes to super telephoto shots, the DMC-FZ18 gives you crisp, stunning images using a 28mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens. For macro shots, the wide-angle setting lets you shoot all the way down to one centimeter from your subject, while the telephoto setting can be used up to one meter (3.28 feet) from your subject. With the Extended Optical Zoom function, zoom power is boosted to around 28.7x (in 3-megapixel resolution mode).

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K 8.1MP September 5, 2008 I absolutely LOVE this camera and the pictures that it takes. It was recommended from my sister-in-law and believe me I will recommend it to everyone I know also.
EXCELLENT September 5, 2008 The best camera for the price, It allows you to set up for semi professionals photos. Excellent purchase
Good for the money September 2, 2008 This camera was purchased as a gift, i just tested for the dead pixels, I could not find any one wich is very good and by the way is made in Japan. About IQ you can look in internet. I think is a good camera for that price (300$).
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K 8.1MP Digital Camera with 18x Wide Angle August 30, 2008 We are happy to use this camera. This is not a professional one, but anyway better than small camera. Has RAW, and certainly 18x zoom + by 4 digital zoom is very cool! I think this is the best in "like-DSLR"
Easy to use, image quality suffers at high zoom August 30, 2008 I've had this little beauty for a month now, so I'm not sure I should already be reviewing it, especially when I've still not tried all that it has to offer.
But some thoughts nevertheless. I've had three film SLRs (Contax, Nikon, Pentax), and have always thought I like the weight and heft of those, and that therefore I would find this one a little too light. I still like the weight and heft, but I got quickly used to the lightweight-ness, if you like, of the FZ18. It's nice. Easy to quickly lift and take pix.
And it is very easy to use -- right out of the box you can be taking very satisfactory pictures, without fiddling with lots of controls.
At the low end (wide-angle) of the zoom, the picture quality is spot-on, sharp and vivid. I like this a lot, and it reminds me why I prefer close-up photography to long-distance.
Still, the telephoto end of the lens seems to me to decrease image quality quite significantly. I'm no expert who can count pixels and noise and so forth, so I'm just talking about looking at the results, and I'm less than happy with my telephoto pictures. Definite lack of sharpness, loss of detail.
One thing that has surprised me is that in Aperture Priority when you go one stop smaller, for example, the shutter speed chosen doesn't decrease by half, which is the equation (and behaviour) from using my film cameras. I presume similar behaviour in SP. It's a little unsettling and has led to some mistakes.
Overall: a nice package, but if I was designing this camera, I would have sacrificed some of the extra zoom to maintain consistent image quality.
