Even without Schenker, love it! February 22, 2008 I've been a fan of UFO since the 70s and especially the melodic, artistic and exceptional style of Michael Schenker's lead guitar playing. However, I personally believe Vinnie Moore does an outstanding job as Michael's replacement (and he's certainly more dependable). Sadly, I had never heard any of Vinnie's work before. He definitely shreds. A friend of mine who is also a longtime UFO/Shenker fan wasn't at all impressed by Vinnie being a replacement. It just goes to prove, "different strokes for different folks".
The addition of Jason Bonham on the drums makes this DVD even better. While he doesn't really deviate from UFO's original sound, he definitely puts his own touch on the music and the man CAN play. Very tight, strong and musical playing. It was my first opportunity to witness Jason's drumming at length and I'm very impressed. He's not at the same level as his Dad (nor will anyone), but he's very good at what he does.
I also enjoyed the second DVD, especially when Pete and Phil talk about the history of the band. Some of their stories are amusing, as well as insightful and interesting. Good stuff!
I was so inspired by this video, that I am planning on seeing the band live in Los Angeles this coming May. Something I never thought I would do without Schenker in the band.
If you have ever loved UFO, buy it.
Not what I was hoping for February 9, 2008 I wish this DVD was more in their hey-day. UFO rocked when in their prime. I wasnt overly impressed with this DVD.
WOW! December 20, 2007 What a great DVD. This is truly a classic rock gem in the rough. I am basically a new fan of UFO. I remember songs like "Too Hot to Handle" being played on the radio briefly in the '80's, but for whatever reason, I never took the initiative to go out and buy any of their stuff. I can't believe they never received more fanfare when the original guys were in their prime. I am truly amazed at how many GREAT old songs they have. As great as the old guys were/still are, this DVD is all about Vinnie Moore and Jason Bonham, in my opinion. Jason Bonham is a great drummer, and Vinnie Moore is an absolutely amazing guitar player. Watching these guys perform songs like Rock Bottom, Lights Out, Let it Roll, etc. is a real treat that any hard rock fan or guitar aficionado will want to watch over and over. I just ordered 3 more copies to give to my brothers and a friend for Christmas, and I can't wait to hear their reactions after they watch it.
UFO delivers a fine DVD package for their fans... October 14, 2007 Showtime is a very good package for any UFO fan to add to their collection. It's pretty straightforward, you get 2 DVD's with concert, studio, interview and extra footage.
The concert itself is a show filled with the "classics" from Strangers In The Night and songs from the You Are Here album which they were promoting at the time. While I liked the You Are Here album very much from the start, I was hesitant that Vinnie Moore was the right fit as guitarist - I had never listened to his solo stuff and thought he may be a typical "shredder" like other players on the Shrapnel label. I was wrong - this DVD shows just how well Vinnie fits with the band and even brings some new life to the older material. I guess it's time to trust Phil and Pete when they pick a guitarist, they're usually right.
The second disc is my favorite with the re-recordings of some of the older stuff. Just watching Phil, Pete and Paul you can see that they are enjoying themselves - I'm sure they liked playing some of the songs other than the the usual set list. You can also see how Jason Bonham added his enthusiasm to the band. They "redo' three of my all time favorites: Try Me(as good as the original), Cherry(one of the best hooks ever written) and Profession Of Violence(without a doubt one of their best songs ever).
All in all this is a good package from a great band and well worth a purchase.
Turn it up to eleven! October 8, 2007 I had forgotten just how good UFO's music was/is. These guys lay down some serious rock riffs, and hem it all together with Mogg's powerful lyrical style.
The venue on this DVD is much smaller than the ones I had seen UFO play back in the 70's. So I was missing that ominous-black-Marshall-stack environment that always made UFO seem larger than life. You wouldn't know it to look at him now, but Pete Way was one of the most entertaining showmen of that era. He always needed plenty of room to run around on stage. This venue prevents that from happening. Given his apparent aloofness (stoned) and his new "Samara" hair-style, maybe it's just as well. UFO is a concert band. This show is set in a club. Probably not a real important point, since you'll be watching it on your TV in your living room.
Mogg's voice is timeless. Sounds better than ever. Bonham's drumming is crisp and explosive. The guitar chops are just sick, but in a good way. Buy this DVD and get a master guitar clinic for free. Pete Way is right on top of things with his bass playing, although I suspect this is due to muscle memory more than anything else.
The production quality of the DVD is excellent, both audio and video. The only problem I had with this DVD is that I could not play it loud enough! Viva UFO!
