Product Description Certified Pilates and fitness instructor Ellen Barrett presents a workout combining yoga moves with Pilates exercises to help tone, strengthen, and burn calories. Genre: Exercise/Fitness Rating: NR Release Date: 7-FEB-2006 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com So here's a portrait of yoga in the 21st Century: this ancient discipline, created thousands of years ago to enhance the meditative experience (the asanas or poses commonly used in hatha yoga were in fact designed to enable meditators to sit quietly, calmly and comfortably for hours on end), is now "a total body blast," with users urged to "get hard core" and "feel the groove," all so "your torso will look buff." At least that's how Ellen Barrett, the relentlessly sunny instructor featured in Crunch Yoga's Super SlimDown: Pilates Yoga Blend, sees it. But while that approach may sound pretty frightening to traditionalists, this can't in fairness be viewed as a typical yoga video; nor does Barrett, who commingles power yoga moves and what she describes as "core-conditioning power pilates," make any claims that it is. Many of the poses--including Warrior II, extended right angle, cobra, locust, and others--will certainly be familiar to yogis. But instead of holding these poses for several breaths, as is common, Barrett takes a more aerobic approach, "pulsing" in and out of positions as if this were a calisthenics class; while that doesn't do much to promote stretching, it does generate a lot of heat and calorie burning. Same goes for the pilates portions, which involve a lot of leg lifts, abdominal work, and other mat-based exercises. One might wish that the instruction were more detailed when it comes to proper breathing, alignment, and so on; it's also a bit paradoxical that while the "Crunch philosophy" states that their fitness programs are designed for "people from all walks of life regardless of shape, size, or ability," the only folks we see onscreen are uniformly attractive, bare-midriffed young women in amazing shape. But hey, whatever. Call it what you will, this is a fast-moving, reasonably challenging program that will likely find favor with many. --Sam Graham

Good Combination October 6, 2008 I enjoy doing Pilates and Yoga and like how this uses them together to form a unique exercise.
It moves well at an upbeat pace and I felt my hearbeat being raised. It is not a cardio workout however, which is fine. When I want to work on cardio I will do more cardio designed exercises.
Ellen provides very clear instruction with good results and I feel like I have had a good workout when I am done.
If you like Pilates and Yoga, this one is a definate to add to your collection.
Slim Down with Ellen Barrett September 23, 2008 As always Ellen Barrett's exercise programs are excellent! The moves are easy to follow and are very effective. I would highy recommend this and all of Ellen's exercise videos. I LOVE the "Studio" workouts!
Fun, Pilates with a TWIST! September 18, 2008 Ok, I admit... I've NEVER done Pilates because I've always had my heart set on yoga. However, this dvd was fun... and change is good right?!? I have to be honest though... there wasn't a huge difference between this and Power yoga, or corepower yoga... maybe that's why I enjoyed the dvd so much. I am a power yoga teacher, trained in Ashtanga, so this dvd was a nice change to the sometimes rigid practice of Ashtanga. In fact, this dvd inspired me to change up my routine a little when I teach. The only drawback... I for one LOVE Sun Salutations for my warm up.. and there weren't any in this dvd. However, the Goddess Squats... OH MY... THAT was intense! My only complaint... I would enjoy more standing and balancing postures, and more than just "stretching" at the end... shavasana is always nice, but then again... that would be yoga right? TAMARA'S YOGA FUSION
Love It!!!! September 18, 2008 This dvd is an excellent workout. Although it never leaves me sore, it certainly leaves me invigorated afterwards. Highly recommended for those that simply love yoga and pilates.
a good buy September 9, 2008 I really liked this DVD -- it's easy to follow, and you get a nice toning workout with cardio benefits too. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't feel that it gives a good cool down -- a few ballet stetches for your upper body are not enough. I pair this with my favorite warm up/cool down yoga DVD by Yolanda Pettinato, also available from Amazon.
