NOT A COOKIE CUTTER SNAP March 14, 2008 Horror fans were caught off guard by a little movie called GINGER SNAPS a few years back. This tale of two teenage sisters with an interest in things dark, one of which, Ginger, who was bitten by a werewolf and became the same, was interesting and new. It was a look at a legendary creature through different eyes, relating much of the change she went through toward the menstrual cycle of a young woman maturing. It ended with her sister Brigitte killing her after infecting herself with the same blood.
This film picks up later with Brigitte trying to control her descent into werewolfism by injecting herself with a serum made from monkshood. When a werewolf traces her scent with the knowledge she is about to change, she and a companion are attacked and Brigitte wakes to find herself committed to a rehabilitation center being treated for drug addiction.
Deprived of the monkshood, Brigitte's change continues more rapidly. The setting of the rehab center lends itself to some mildly cliched items such as an all too happy group therapy leader, a supervisor who thinks she has seen it all and perverted aides who trade drugs for sex. But all of these are not the focus and help in setting up the story rather than become one.
One patient in the group realizes what Brigitte is or is about to become. Ghost (Tatiana Maslany) is in under observation with her grandmother. It seems that their house burned down and grandma is now wrapped in bandages, unable to communicate. With no place else to go (and money coming in from grandma's account) Brigitte is allowed to stay on. While Brigitte shows no interest in her, Ghost becomes Brigitte's best friend.
As Brigitte's transformation goes on unabated, the werewolf's search for his possible mate continues. And as he draws nearer, all at the rehab center have their lives in jeopardy. An escape by Ghost and Brigitte leads to a whole new set of problems and an ending that is surprising and satisfying at the same time (although some may figure out a portion of it before hand).
Well made movie that holds you from beginning to end, offering a non-typical monster movie and a psychological thriller in one. The acting is more solid than one would expect for a film of this kind and the special effects are truly believable.
If you enjoy horror films that are not too predictable, that offer a few nice scares and that put a new twist on an old tale, then you should enjoy this one. Not only does it accomplish all of these things, it does so without completely redoing the first film over again. A must see for horror fans and worth watching for all other viewers.
GINGER'S NOT IN THIS MOVIE! March 1, 2008 This movie was pretty good. I would have given it 3.5 stars but i liked it more than i didn't like it. The cover is kinda missleading because ginger is not in this movie but she is on the cover so... This movie is full of suprises, twists and just enough blood. I liked the first one better because i LOVE Ginger Fitzgerald (Bridgett's sister). They only way this movie could have been better was if Ginger had somehow come back to life and was is this movie!
Great November 16, 2007 In an industry that is filled to the brim with stupid werewolf movies this one is a glimmer of hope. Both one & two were done very well & there is really nothing bad speak of. Great production & art design, great acting & great effects. What else could you want? I enjoy watching these films regularly.
Addiction Encaged October 20, 2007 [Don't read if you haven't seen the first.]
After the recent passing of Ginger, Bridgette continues to mourn for her sister. She knows that she needs to be stronger than her sister was to survive, but to be stronger she must become addicted to the Monkshood that 'delays' the process.
One night after going to the library to check out some books on Lycnathropy, she has another close encounter with the creature after it kills the librarian.
She runs and collapses in the snow.
The next morning, she wakes up in a rehabilitation clinic.
Without the Monkshood, Bridgette can't delay the process. So, she turns to a worker who has it... But she must do whatever he wants. -----
The sequel is very, very good. It leaves you mourning along with Bridgette for Ginger's loss. Of course, it has everything the original does plus more.
You need to have this if you are a fan of werewolf movies.
