3 out of 5 stars NFL SOFT Rocks...   June 9, 2004

In the mood to sate my craving for a little gridiron goodness during the NFL off-season, I fished this particular video outta the quarter bin at my fave used-CD-and-video joint, took it home, and fired `er up. While I thought most of the game highlight footage and sideline action was pretty cool, I had a bit of trouble with the "rocking" tunes they set the action to. I also found some of the editing and video `special effects' kinda silly-some of the stuff reminded me of something you'd see comin' outta the editing room of one of those "make-your-own-music-video" shops at the local mall.

Anyway, back to my gripe about the tunes. Now don't get me wrong-- I like the works of John `Cougar' Mellencamp, Bon Jovi, Elton John, and Robert Palmer all right. I just don't feel that their songs have a hard enough edge to properly set the mood and feel of the corresponding footage. For great defensive stops, it's a given to go with Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'", rather than Mellencamp's "Authority Song". For those really hard-hitting tackles, nothing can beat the one-two punch of Guns `N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Nightrain". And for those old-school highlights from the early days of NFL Films, you'd do much better goin' with Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" than the Isley Brothers' "Shout" or Elton John's "Crocodile Rock". For those awesome running plays, Deep Purple's "Highway Star" is the go-to track. And for those amazing Hail Marys and long-bomb hookups, AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" gets the nod over Elton John's "Rocket Man" ten times outta ten in my book. I tell ya, if NFL Films had gone with my song selections, this bad-boy really WOULD have rocked...

BTW in case you're wondering: most of the highlight footage shown here comes from the mid-80s up to the 1991-92 season/post-season. Some familiar pieces include a few highlights from the 1988, 1989 and 1990 NFC championship games, Super Bowls XXIV, XXV, and XXVI, and one of the two winning Hail Mary pass plays the Falcons pulled on the 49ers in the 1991 season. Also thrown in for fun are a couple of helmet-popping-loose segments from Super Bowls VII and XI, and an entire segment dedicated to several amazing runs by former Lions RB Barry Sanders.
