Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential video
George Cukor, Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," had his hands full with the all-female cast of this 1939 film adaptation of the Clare Boothe play. The story finds a group of catty, competitive friends destroying reputations at social gatherings. The dialogue sparkles, Joan Crawford's performance as a husband stealer is still a classic, the film looks wonderful in Cukor's hands, and the Technicolor fashion-show scene is a one-of-a-kind Hollywood experience. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Women   October 9, 2008
Great movie! I highly recommend renting it if you enjoy classics or if you are simply looking for a highly entertaining movie to watch. If you enjoyed the current release, you'll love the original version of "The Women" even better.

5 out of 5 stars terrific service   October 8, 2008
I ordered a copy of The Women, the old movie made in the 1930's, and it arrived in just a few days. The price was good, as was the service. I have not yet viewed the movie, as I am waiting for my company to arrive the end of this month.I am certain it will be fine. I love this movie. A group of friends said the new version is terrible, so I am having them in to watch this next month, so they can enjoy this lovely old movie, too.
I was named after Norma Shearer, in 1930.
Thank you for your usual fine prompt service.
Norma Coffin

5 out of 5 stars Original is better   October 6, 2008
In this case, old is definitely better! I had seen this movie several times on TV, but had missed scenes that had been cut for commercials (i.e., fashion show in color, while the rest of the movie was in b&w). Although the new version of this movie is up-to-date in its views of women, the original was definitely more "catty." Also, the new version missed out on the triumphant face-to-face scene between the wife and the other woman at the end of the original. Finally, the scene in the new version, with Meg Ryan's character eating the stick of butter, contained a line that simply ruined the movie. I say that because the message of a woman being able to survive without a man was lost with that one line and no mother (Meg) would want her daughter to think that's what it takes to "keep" a man...

5 out of 5 stars Jungle RED!   October 6, 2008
The Women is a classic tale of love and betrayal and the in's and outs of love no matter the decade. Yes overly campy at times,it still is a great movie. Dont bother seeing the remake its absolutely terrible. But this is a classic with Joan Crawford as Crystal Allen, the seductress and man stealer! You cant go wrong with this movie. This is a must have in any series movie buff's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the new version   October 6, 2008
Of course the original is better than the remake. The Women is a classic movie which shows the level of class (or lack of) women had back in the 30's. The fashion was fabulous! The remake does this movie NO justice
