The MM-1 Manual Reel Mower is a new model introduced by Sunlawn in 2006. The MM-1, with a height range of 1 - 3 inches, is an excellent choice for higher-cut lawns. Cutting width is 16 inches, weight of the mower is 25 pounds.

1 out of 5 stars Broke within a Year, Sunlawn Support Invisible   August 12, 2008
I was a big fan of the MM-1 when it first arrived. More than happy to do my part for the environment, I didn't mind that it required a little extra attention to not let the grass get too long.

However, after less than a year, of which only about 4 months were during cutting season, a bracket snapped that prevents the reel from turning freely. Sunlawn did not respond to a voice-mail. They sent an e-mail in response to mine, saying they would replace the affected part. That was 3 weeks ago, and additional e-mails have gone unanswered. Buyer Beware!

3 out of 5 stars Be gentle to your MM-1 and it will be good to you, if not great.   June 29, 2008
I have owned my MM-1 for about a year. Previously, I owned a 16-inch American Lawn Mower reel mower, which I sold to a friend. For those who are looking to purchase a reel mower and are used to a gas mower, I'll second what others have said: you can't abuse a reel mower and expect it to cut well. This means checking the blades to make sure they are adjusted, keeping your lawn free of branches and other impediments, overlapping your rows, and mowing your lawn often to keep it from getting too tall. As for comparing the Sunlawn to the American, I do like the Sunlawn noncontact blade system; no matter how much I tried to tweak the blade tightness on my American, the cut was uneven and the blades did seem to dull gradually. The other benefit of the Sunlawn noncontact blade is that the MM-1 requires less effort to push than my old American. I will agree with others and say that I am a bit disappointed in the durability of my MM-1, most notably the plastic pinion gear, which seems to have worn on the inside and occasionally does not engage in tall, thick grass. But overall, I am satisfied with my MM-1, and would recommend it (or a Brill, for a few extra dollars) to anyone with a small lawn who is looking for something simpler, lighter, quieter, and greener than a gas mower.

1 out of 5 stars Reel mower not good in the North.......   June 19, 2008
I PURCHASED THE REEL MOWER AND ATTEMPTED TO USE IT FOR A MONTH. I COULD NEVER GET A GOOD CLEAN CUT. MY GRASS WAS BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE IT WAS BURNING. IT ALSO NEVER GAVE ME THE "FLAT TOP" LOOK THAT I LIKE. I WENT BACK TO MY POWER MOWER AND IT STRAIGHTENED UP AGAIN. I IMAGINE IT'S THE TYPE OF GRASS THAT I HAVE-FROM MASSACHUSETTS. THE MOWER ITSELF SEEMED VERY WELL BUILT AND EASY TO USE. IT'S A SHAME I COULDN'T IT TO WORK.

1 out of 5 stars POS Mower   May 27, 2008
This thing broke the first day I had it. It's made of plastic and white metal. A piece of the white metal broke and I sent it right back. If this was made in the US of A it would probably be a good mower. Buyer beware.

3 out of 5 stars Expected more...   May 21, 2008
Like others, I wanted a Brill but the 1.8 cut height is too short for the hot summers in the Northeast so I opted for the Sunlawn MM1. The first problem I had was the left bracket that controls the height. It wouldn't move. The bushing gets stuck between the 1 1/2" and 2 1/4" setting. The channel is a bit to tight. I have contacted Sunlawn but haven't heard anything yet. The ends where the roller bar connects seem to be a little too spacey. There is a lot of play between the rollers. Not sure if this is designed this way.
When I first pushed the mower, I was shocked at the NO noise. I mean this thing is absolutely quiet and takes no effort to push it.
When I first cut the back lawn, it seemed to cut unevenly. It left quite a few blades of grass and my grass was NOT high, maybe 3".
When I cut my front lawn (which was about 5"), it did a good job but still left a lot more stragglers than I counted on. Like other manual mowers it does not do a good job at the edges of the lawn, just fair.
I am used to cutting my lawn with an old Craftsman manual (25 years old) and this was a joy to push compared to the Craftsman; very light and effortless.
But I am a bit of a stickler when it comes to service. If Sunlawn does not make good on replacing the height bracket, I will definately return it for a refund, just on principle.

Review updated 5/27/08--- Since using this mower several times I am sending it back! Sunlawn has never returned my emails or calls concerning the bad part and the cutting on this mower is bad. It leaves too many stragglers and cuts very uneven. My lawn is fescue/rye and in good shape and very level. I wish I could edit my rate stars, I would put it at "1".
I have since purchased a gas Cub Cadet and it cuts fantastically. I have had several reel mowers and gas mowers over the years and am now convinced, that gas mowers undoubtedly cut much better. Probably due to the fact that their blades "suck-up" the grass thereby shearing them off evenly. I really wanted to like a reel mower, but I think they are sub-par in their performance. When your grass is well kept, only about three inches high and level, there is NO reason why a reel mower shoudn't cut the grass evenly.
