I put this on a timer in my kids' room (ages 9, 7 and 5). It turns on a couple of hours before bedtime (to get warmed up and start flowing) and turns off a couple of hours after they drift off). It is relaxing to watch and provides some light without being harsh. My kids know not to play with or touch the lamp, otherwise I wouldn't be comfortable using it this way (as a nightlight of sorts).

This gift is for a friend, so I didn't have a chance to turn it on and use it. However the shipping was fast, and I did receive the shipment right away.

The yellow lava is too transparent. It's not opaque like your typical lava lamp, so it can be hard to see.

For two years now, I've had this same lava lamp except with a black base, and it still functions as it should and still looks good. Then again, I don't use it every single night.
Since my room's main light source went out, I've also sometimes taken off the glass and allowed the bulb to light the room bright enough to read. ... I really should get that main light source fixed, though.

I was looking for an interesting and even exotic element for my home and I was lucky to find this lava lamp. It looks great especially at a corner or on a table and it does provide some light around. Overall I am happy.
