Great reference for those spirit messages. Ted Andrews expands our awareness to all of nature.

Nature provides animals to serve as spiritual guides, messengers, friends and sources of high-quality protein. Many individuals seem to have special affinities with particular animals, insects, birds, and fish.
This book helped me to listen to Mr. Nature and discovered that HE IS MASCULINE!! despite all the mid-american marketing bushell crepeooola you see in the media. MASCULINE with gigantic COjones and we aren't talking GRACie slick or otherwise - boohah
In conjunction with this book (and Jupiter aligning with Mars) and his follow up book "Animal Squeaks", Ted Andrews provides information that allowed me to ID my totem animal -- the ground hornet. I am now learning to honor and utilize Ground Hornet energy in my life.
I can hardly wait for the last book of the trilogy (due out in April 2009) - "Bride of Nature Speaks."
Ever notice that vegans tend to have carnivore totems?? wolves, night-hawks, etc. whereas carnivores have insects and grubs?

Excellent Must Have Resource June 24, 2008
I wish I'd have this book years ago when I was first starting down the nature-based spiritual path. Like Ted's other books, this is packed full of useful and interesting information, some of which is available elsewhere -- sure -- but much is unique to his work. This is a valuable resource and I highly recommend it to all who are seeking a more grounded, whole, and alive relationship with natural awareness.

Ted Andrews provides powerful insights into how nature elements speak to us each day, if we pay attention to their messages. I recommend this book for anyone who loves spending time in nature.
