5 out of 5 stars The boxcar Children   November 19, 2008
The Boxcar Children series is about 4 orphans living with their grandfather. My son loves these books and so do I. Not only are they fun to read, it's fun to try to solve the mystery that unwinds in each one. These books are perfect for 2-5th grade. Older children tend to think they are immature. They are lower level (k-3)AR books, book levels vary. They are a refreshing change from Beasts, fighting, and violence. They teach family values, compassion and thinking skills. It is best to start with Boxcar #1 and then they can be read in any order. Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars A Child's Reading Delight   October 21, 2008
The Boxcar Children is a creative, beautiful story that captures the interest of the child in all of us. 5 orphans, surviving on their own, making friends of a few select adults.... how quickly these capture the imagination and take us to another world. Each book, complete in itself, nests among the many other stories. However, I do recommend reading the books in order, although not necessary.
I discovered the Boxcar Children series when I entered first grade. I started reading at about 3, and the "See Dick Run" was not holding my interest. Although I loved to read, there seemed to be little literature "out there" for imaginative young children - after all, at 6, after the Bobsy twins, there was was little else - or so my parents thought.
My first grade teacher, a very wise person, gave me the Boxcar Children to read while the other students learned "Dick & Jane." It was a great discovery. I devoured the books, returning again and again to her bookshelves for another Boxcar book.
When my nephew turned 5, I gave him the first 4 boxcar children books. And he was hooked. He now has the entire set. I am now purchasing these for my niece, who is 5.
I cannot think of a better gift to help a child discover the magic of reading. The boxcar children live forever in my memory, and I share them whenever I can with children wherever I meet them.

5 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane..   September 26, 2008
This was my favorite book growing up in the early fifties. So happy to see that the Boxcar Children are still loved!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series for Young Advanced Readers   July 8, 2008
My six year old daughter loves these books! I purchased the books # 1 through #19 which were written by the original author. My daughter is reading at about a 4th grade level. These books are easy to read. She tries to figure out the clues and solve the mysteries. This summer she is reading 1 book every 2 days. They are each about 125 to 160 pages. The best part is the stories are totally appropriate for her age, yet are at a higher reading level than 1st grade. The characters are great! The books are very similar in theme, although each story covers different topics. There is historical information and other facts to be learned - even things I did not know. The books numbered 20 and above are not written by the original author. Some of them have a few more advanced words to read. I think all of the books would be appropriate for late 2nd or 3rd grade reading level. Older children may enjoy the books, or they may tire of the similar themes.
