Not really book one.... January 2, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although listed as book 1 in this series, Cry Wolf is not really the start: there's a prequel in an anthology, which I learned after taking the novel home. For those who know to hunt down the other book to read first, Cry Wolf is probably a good read. However, for the casual reader who plucked it off the shelf it is confusing and irritating; there's no attempt at back story, constant allusions to a previous series of events and a host of completely unintroduced characters and events that the reader is apparently expected to know already. I struggled through the fist few chapters but found myself so irritated by having my night's reading ruined by unexplained plots and empty characters that I can't imagine taking any more interest in the author.
... Huh? December 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
`Cry Wolf' is apparently a novel based off of a short story. This is apparent because as soon as you start reading you start playing catch-up, trying to figure out what happened in the last book, because this one assumes you've read the first one. I seriously recommend you read "On the Prowl' before you purchase this book, it will help a lot. Though the author does sparsely inject bits about the previous story into the plot and makes an attempt to fill you in, it doesn't cover everything. Even without reading the first story I still enjoyed the book, but with a few bothersome questions left over.
First off, there are some inaccuracies in the book. We are given a rough idea of what werewolves look like in their wolf form, but only a few of them are described. Charles is red, and we are not given any explanation why he is red. I can only guess it's because werewolf fur color goes with a persons skin color, since Charles is Native American. Also, another werewolf who I will not give away, actually seems to change color! In one scene he is described as grey on grey, and in another he is described as black. (???) I re-read these passages, and unless I missed something it must have been a mistake.
Another annoying thing is that Anna's wolf isn't given any description, other than the fact it's eyes are silvery blue. Other wolves only get visuals at the very end of the book, so you've been picturing a character as one thing when suddenly you are told that that is wrong. I was irked. Briggs does the same thing with the human forms, I was halfway through the book before I found out that Anna had whiskey-colored hair. This really bothered me, as I am a visual reader, but may not bother others as much. Your call.
As far as the story goes, it was pretty entertaining. The romance was there and it was good, the characters stayed believable and likeable and there were no Mary-Sues. The ending was a bit ham-handed, in my opinion, but it worked. Even better, the sex scenes are (oh my gosh!) Actually realistic! No purple prose or flowery descriptions, I actually preferred these scenes, albeit short, to many romance novels. The dialogue and actions between the characters were also very realistic, mistakes were made, awkward things happen, and goofy moments occur. Even a 400 year old werewolf can slip up sometimes, which adds to the appeal of the story.
As I said, please Read `On the Prowl' before you try this one. But I still haven't read it, and I managed to enjoy this book. As I said, your call. I'm giving it 4 starts, -1 for not including the proper character introductions and not mentioning that this is not a stand-alone story.
Couldn't put it down! December 30, 2008 When I picked up Cry Wolf I admit I was skeptical because of the sultry woman on the cover. But soon I was caught in the pages, staying up until 4am to finish it! Good storyline, believable world and characters. I can't wait for the next one!
Pleased to see another good series from Briggs December 28, 2008 I'm a fan of the Mercy Thompson series, so I already had some background understanding as this new series takes place in the same universe. Taking the advice of another reviewer, I did first read Briggs' short story in the On the Prowl anthology which introduces the characters, and I'm glad I did as the story explained how Charles and Anna met. If reprints are made of this particular book in the future, I hope Briggs will include the story in the book.
Although explained what made an Omega special, it wasn't until the end of the book that I fully understood what made an Omega so special, and I'll be interested to see how Anna's special abilities are put to use in future books. Are they effective only with werewolves, or can they possibly affect other were creatures?
I enjoyed the book and I look forward to the next in the series.
2.5 stars. Ok, but not a hit. The last half was too drawn out. The beginning was missing. December 27, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
STORY BRIEF: Anna was turned into a werewolf three years earlier by a member of Leo's pack. Leo was the alpha leader of the Chicago area pack. He ordered his pack members to rape and beat Anna for three years until his death. Bran was the leader of all werewolves in the US. When he learned about Leo, Bran sent Charles to kill Leo. Charles meets Anna and knows she is his mate. Anna and Charles leave Chicago and go to his home in Montana. Something evil is happening in the wilderness nearby. Bran sends Charles and Anna to investigate and stop or kill it. Charles is an alpha werewolf and Bran's son. Anna is an Omega werewolf which means she is not affected by orders from alphas, she doesn't have to follow them. She also has a calming effect on other werewolves.
REVIEWER'S OPINION: I normally do not read urban fantasy. I prefer romance genres over straight fantasy genres. Therefore, my reviews may not be appropriate for die-hard urban fantasy fans. I've loved some stories which are not romance, for example: Harry Potter, but Cry Wolf didn't rate as high for me. It had some interesting parts. It was an ok story.
The first half was good, but the last half was too drawn out. The last half was about Anna and Charles searching for the evil in the wilderness. I was impatient for things to happen during the last half.
I wish the author had written more about the three years Anna spent with Leo's pack. The book starts with Leo's death and only has a few flashbacks about what Anna went through. I wanted to know more about why Leo turned her, and why he had his pack brutalize her. What did they do to her and how did she respond? Apparently the pack couldn't disobey Leo, but someone disobeyed enough to tell her she could call Bran. When did this happen and why didn't it happen sooner? What did she say to Bran when she called for help? I was curious about many things from that time and wish the author would have shown it.
Guess what? I just learned that the story about these previous three years was told in the anthology "On The Prowl." I kept my previous paragraph as is, because it shows how I reacted without knowing there was a prequel. I definitely think readers should read the prequel first. The prequel was not listed anywhere in my paperback book. I thought "Cry Wolf" was the first in the series. It is not.
