Product Description A young doctor is devastated after he discovers one of his friends dead in his house following a dinner party. Dr. Jerry Weissman, unravels the complex methods and motives for her death and it challenges his views about the dying process. The ethical controversies concealed in her death also motivate him to transform emotionally withdrawn relationships with friends, family, and patients. In writing The Other Face of Murder, Dr. Gil Porat joins the ranks of other distinguished medical professionals, from Crichton to Chekhov, who have made of writing their second love after medicine. In this outstanding first novel, Porat's penetrating prose upholds the tradition of those preceding him while simultaneously expanding the boundaries of literature. His ability to convert the tragic into the hilarious, without degrading an important topic, rewards the intelligent reader. Be prepared to laugh and learn.

A Poorly Written Novel September 13, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
Reading this book was arduous because the writing is so poor. Almost every sentence is "wrong", with the wrong word chosen to depict a feeling, mood or to describe a character. There is no depth here, no genuine reflection. How the other folks could get through the book and think it is either funny or riveting just baffles me. I don't see the characters, know them or ever care about them. On the back cover the blurb likens Porat to Checkov. Hah! What a laugh; that was the funniest line in the whole novel.
Great June 24, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Dr Gil Porat has the unique ability to inject laugh out loud humor into a very poignant reality, facing death. He does it with comedic timing, grace, thoughtfulness and unpretentiousness. I alternated between great amusement and feeling very introspective. The icing on the cake is the mystery that developes that keeps you reading till the end. The debate over the right of the terminally ill to have the choice on the manner and timing of death vs the need to preverse life for as long as possible makes death with dignity a very real complexed ethical dilemma. This book is a fast read that you won't want to put down.
Great Read! June 13, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Very good read! This book keeps you interested from the first page. With such unique characters and storyline, I did not realize how funny this book was until about halfway through it! Not only was it very funny, but it was also very thought provoking. Dr. Porat very subtly opens the reader's eyes to the complexity of end of life issues. Impressive!
Wow!!! June 12, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Dr Porat genuinely, tastefully and with humor brought a serious subject to the forefront of our minds. He successfully brought to my attention the question What if? I am looking forward to the next book and will always be a big supporter of Dr Porat. Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Murder? May 31, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Great reading for anyone in the health care field and for anyone with a palpable pulse. The practice of medicine (and nursing) should include compassionate and thoughtful care of individuals who wish to die with dignity and grace on their terms and in their time frame. Your novel is a great proponent of this idea. Thankyou for not treating your characters as stereotypes and for writing a genuinely intriguing, intelligent, thought provoking and yes, funny story. As a nurse and as someone who has recently cared for my dying sister, I found great comfort in your words. Thankyou.
