Good general overview January 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is great if you are just beginning to research weight-loss surgery and you have little or no knowledge of the surgery or of the medical field. However, I was looking for something that covered the surgery, especially post-op, more in-depth. I also wanted something that would cover the emotional aspects of having surgery and dealing with the changes that come after having surgery--it really wasn't there. Because of this, I was disappointed.
Most of the information in the book can be located online, or is information patients will (or should) receive from their surgeons prior to surgery. The charts and lists are easy to find within the book, and the book is VERY easy to read and understand. While some parts of it are "light-hearted," it's NOT a humor or comedy book. It IS written by a bariatric surgeon, so the information is credible and accurate, and he briefly covers every type of surgery with each one's plusses and minuses. This book would probably be a very good option for relatives &/or support people who want a better understanding of the surgery, the process and its requisite steps, and the post-op lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, supplements, etc.) that their loved one will have to adopt. There are even a couple of recipes in the book.
But if you've already decided to have surgery, if you've done as much research as most people having this surgery have done, or you are post-op, save your money; there are a lot of other options that would be better than this one.
Weight Loss Surgery: A lighter look at a heavy subject May 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read several books on weight loss surgery and this one is by far the easiest to understand and a little bit funny with a few corney jokes. I would recommend this for anyone considering the surgery.
A good laugh about getting lighter March 18, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
In this book, Terry Simpson manages to present a ton of useful information about gastric bypass surgery in an easy-to-understand way. Don't let the whimsical tone or the cartoons fool you: this is an incredibly useful book for anyone considering gastric bypass surgery -- or for that matter, someone like me who has had the surgery and has some questions about what's going on now. Although I had my surgery nearly two years ago and had read (I thought) everything there was to read on the subject, Simpson explained some things (like why you're not supposed to drink liquids with your meals) that no one else had ever satisfactorily explained to me. I plan on keeping this book for reference and recommend it highly to anyone considering the surgery.
Informative. January 3, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The author was very honest and told you the ups and downs of WLS.Which as far as I am concerned is what the prospective patient should be aware of.

Another GREAT, GREAT, weight loss surgery book. Buy this one and keep it in your WLS library!! It is well written, an easy read, and has tons of information with a bit a humor! The doctor who wrote it have performed numerous surgeries and is very knowledgeable. This book gives info on every WLS out there, even the ones that aren't out there any more. It tells how to use your tool to your benefit! Good vitamin information, and explains the stage eating. Great book... another MUST HAVE!!!
