Product Description Get ready for the read of your life. Never before has a single book combined awesome vans, unicorns, Billy Joel, and erotic fiction in such a potent combination. A writing tour de force? Perhaps. A reading experience that will sear itself into your consciousness like a red-hot branding iron? Without question.Comedian and basic cable superstar Michael Ian Black unleashes the full fury of his astonishing intellect in this collection of short comic essays. My Custom Van is a no-holds-barred assault to the funny bone that will literally beat you into submission with hilarity*. How did he do it? How did he create such a fine anthology? Answer: With love. Michael opened his heart and used the magical power of love to write more than fifty thought-provoking essays like, "Why I Used a Day-Glo Magic Marker to Color My Dick Yellow," and "An Open Letter to the Hair Stylist Who Somehow Convinced Me to Get a Perm When I Was in Sixth Grade." Maybe you think love is not a substitute for "good writing skills" and "spell check." Bull pucky! When it comes to writing books, love is the most powerful word processor of all. Sounds pretty great, right? And yet...something is still holding you back from paying the full purchase price of this book. What is it? Perhaps you secretly believe you do not deserve a book this good. Nonsense -- you deserve this book and so much more. In fact, if Michael could have written you all the stars in the sky, that's what he would have done. But he couldn't do that, due to his lack of knowledge in the area of astronomy. So he wrote this book instead. And this flap copy. Enjoy. * Michael Ian Black is not responsible for any actual injuries caused by reading this book.

awsome January 3, 2009 Hilarious, I loved it. Great deadpan dark humor. The 50 essays were short enough even for those of us with the most terminal cases of ADD. Takes me back to The State.

Did I actually see a reviewer of this book say she "usually buys chelsea handler books"?
IF YOU LIKE CHELSEA HANDLER OR ANY VARIATION OF HER BRAND OF COMEDY, THEN YOU WILL NOT ENJOY THIS BOOK. GO BUY A DILBERT BOOK INSTEAD.
Do you like Strangers With Candy?, Upright Citizens Brigade? David Cross? Patton Oswalt? Kids In The Hall? Mr Show? Zach Galifianakis? Bob Odenkirk? Stephen Colbert? Sarah Silverman? Conan? Adam Carolla? Artie Lange?
AKA: Do you like good comedy? then you'll like this book.
I am a huge fan of comedy and Black got it right with this one. He is a creative powerhouse. 5/5.
This book will blow your mind all over your face December 20, 2008 From what I have noticed Michael Ian Black has two sides. One is his acting ( Johnny Blue Jeans) and the other is well...just him. To be fair, he's better off being himself. When he is, works of brilliance such as his book My Custom Van are created. Billy Joel, silly erotic literature, and his love for candy corn. This book has it all. I guarentee that if it does not make you want to spit out your morning cup of joe, you do not have a funny bone. and you do not like candy corn.
Call it 3.5 stars... December 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all I will admit that I really like Michael Ian Black, so I had high hopes for this book. I had hoped it would be as good as Jon Stuart's 'Naked Pictures of Famous People' but alas it was not. There were certainly some essays in this book that I found hilarious (the references to David Sedaris were good), but there were also many that I found to be just OK or even mediocre. If you can find this for a discounted price, I say give it a whirl. Otherwise, keep looking elsewhere for your comedic essay needs.
A Van Ride You Won't Regret! December 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michael Ian Black is recognizable from his appearances on numerous TV shows (among them Ed - The Complete First Season, The State - Season 1, and Reno 911 - The Complete First Season), or as co-writer of the Simon Pegg film Run, Fatboy, Run. Luckily, his comedic talents are not limited to film and television production.
My Custom Van is a wonderful collection of short (yet powerful) humorous essays that amuse and delight at every page. Covering a range of bizarre topics, Black covers everything from how a chicken might describe himself on a dating service, to reasons not to buy Tundra from a door-to-door salesman, to what must go through Billy Joel's mind as he drives to a holiday party (my personal favorite). Whether he is compiling a list of New Year resolutions or drafting a suicide note, Black is laugh-out-loud funny with an absurd sense of humor and a dry wit.
If you only buy one book this year, make sure it is McCarthy Cormac's The Road. But if you manage to purchase two, you might want to squeeze this comedic gem onto your shopping list.
