Product Description When her ex-boyfriend, Trip, gets engaged to Hollywood's latest It Girl, Manhattan attorney Brooke Miller plans to attend the wedding. Who says a modern girl can't stay friends with her ex? Besides, Brooke's got her sexy Scottish fiance, Douglas, to take as her date. Okay, so maybe he's not exactly her fiance, but they're living together in his apartment, so she'll be getting the ring any minute, right? Wrong. After a fight leaves her without a boyfriend (much less a fiance) just days before the wedding, Brooke faces the ultimate humiliation of attending her ex-boyfriend's nuptials alone. Desperate to find a replacement to fill Douglas's kilt, Brooke concocts an outrageous plan to survive the wedding and win the man of her dreams, all with her dignity ever-so-slightly intact.

From S. Krishna's Books October 27, 2008 I've read a lot of reviews of Scot On The Rocks and they all gushed about how wonderful this book was, so I've been wanting to read it for awhile. When Brenda Janowitz released the sequel, Jack With A Twist, recently, I managed to get my grubby little fingers on it without even having read Scot On The Rocks. I decided it was about time to pick up this book, and I'm glad I did.
Scot On The Rocks is funny and charming. I'd say it was quirky, except it's not - it's more on the "completely insane" end of the spectrum, but in a good way. Brooke watches her situation spiral more and more out of control, and it's hilarious to read about her running around frantically, trying to regain some semblance of command over her life. Of course, there is always the question of why she didn't just tell her ex-boyfriend that her fiance wasn't able to make it to the wedding, and that she was bringing a different date, but if she had done that we wouldn't have this lovely book, so I'll put that question on the back burner.
Janowitz is also a pro at making her characters likable. I really enjoyed reading about Brooke; she was written well enough to seem like a crazy friend, rather than a character in a book I just picked up. I can imagine sitting with Brooke over drinks, listening to her relate the crazy story of her ex-boyfriend's wedding. It's a great talent which makes me look very forward to reading the author's books in the future.
The one thing I wish is that we had gotten more than that brief glimpse of Brooke's life with Douglas. Though I was able to form a solid (and negative) opinion of him through the course of the book, I didn't know much about their relationship when they broke up.
As I said before, I have Jack With A Twist sitting on my shelf right now, and I'm looking forward to continuing Brenda's story. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who's a fan of chick lit, or anyone looking for a light, fun read.
Eh... September 24, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love chick lit books, and this one has been on my "list" for a while. However, I couldn't really get into the storyline. It was extremely predictable, I could have told you from the first chapter how it would end. I agree with another reviewer that I had a hard time believing that Brooke was a lawyer in a big firm considering that her friends accused her of slacking constantly, she seemed to do NO work and found humor in that fact (spending all her work time either shopping online or scheming), and I just don't hear lawyers speaking the way she did. It also bugged me how she was constantly "pulling her hair out of her bun." Was there supposed to be slow motion camera shot and music each time she did this (a la most shampoo commercials)? There were some really funny parts (especially with Jack and his "accent") but I found that I liked Brooke less than the supporting characters.
Excellently funny September 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am such a fan of chick lit, so I was absolutely thrilled to read Scot on the Rocks, written by the very marriage-focused Brenda Janowitz.
First off, I have to comment that I loved the cover! Yes, you will often find me commenting on book covers - which are, in my opinion, very important! This cover made me want to either eat or wear it!
I loved the premise of this book. Our main character Brooke had her heart broken by Trip - but that's okay - she is soooooo over him! So much so, in fact, that she is planning on attending Trip's wedding to "some girl". Brooke is all set for the big day, especially since she can show off her absolutely wonderful boyfriend Douglas, who should be proposing himself ------ any day now!
You can see where this is going and I loved it. What follows is a hysterically funny and, at times, extremely touching story of how Brooke will do anything to prove to Trip and to EVERYONE else that she is desirable, happy and in love. Sure, this book is a little over the top, but so what? Its chick lit and the goal is to tell an entertaining story and the author manages to do this beautifully.
What I also liked about the book was that there are some very touching moments. I felt how painful it was for Brooke to have to deal with her ex-boyfriend and his apparent joy, when she could not seem to get it together. I also cheered for Brooke as she finally gets to the place she needs to be.
I gotta say, between Trip and Douglas, I was betting that Brooke would give up on men altogether :) and I thought I had picked all the losers!
This is a great, funny and touching read. I highly recommend it.
Fun, cute story September 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Question: Your ex-boyfriend calls you (the two of you are still friends) to tell you he's engaged and wants you to attend the wedding. Do you...
(a) Tell him how excited you are for him and say you will attend (you are genuinely happy for him).
(b) Hang up on him and have a tantrum screaming repeatedly: "how can he get engaged before me?"
(c) Tell him congrats, but unfortunately you have another thing to attend on that day.
(d) Say to him, "What a coincidence! I'm engaged too!"
Manhattan attorney Brooke Miller chooses (d) which sets into motion a hilarious chain of events that will lead her to where she really wants to be. The story begins with Brooke living with her boyfriend, Douglas, who is Scottish. Brooke thinks she has it all: a great NYC apartment, a loving and committed boyfriend, a great career at one of Manhattan's prestigious law firms, and two best friends, Jack and Vanessa. Just when things can't get any better, Douglas tells Brooke it's over and kicks her out of their (well, technically it's his) apartment. Soon, she discovers he has been cheating on her and plans to marry the other woman.
When things can't get any worse, Trip, Brooke's former boyfriend from law school, calls to tell her he's engaged. Without thinking, she tells him she's engaged too and quickly concocts a plan to win Douglas back. Unfortunately, Brooke can make her plans, but can't plan her results as Douglas doesn't want to have anything to do with her. Together with Jack and Vanessa, they formulate a plan so Brooke can attend Trip's wedding with her fiance, "Douglas". Through her scheming, Brooke really learns what she has been chasing after has always been right in front of her.
Madcap Wedding Fun July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We've all been there before: dumped by a not-so-great guy for someone else. Yet something inside compels us to try to win them back, dignity and common sense be damned. Brooke Miller is with us.
Brooke made the fatal mistake of doubting the sexiness of her Scottish boyfriend Douglas's kilt, and soon found herself without a date to her ex-boyfriend Trip's California wedding, homeless, and dumped for a white trashy woman with a name that sounds like a shampoo from the 80's. Didn't anybody tell her that men traditionally wear nothing under those kilts? I always wondered about rash, but whatever.
Brooke's also a lawyer. Not the hardest working lawyer, mind you. Her best friends, Vanessa and Jack, work at the same law firm. Jack's her superior, technically, but lets her Internet shop and leave messages for Douglas to her heart's content. What a guy.
Did I mention that Brooke, in her haste to outdo Trip, told him that not only was Douglas Scottish, but also her fiance? Girl, that doesn't trump the fact that he's marrying a Hollywood actress, so don't cause more trouble for yourself with an unnecessary lie!
Rather than back out of the wedding like a sane and rational person, Brooke twists Jack's arm into masquerading as Douglas for the weekend at the wedding. He must like wearing skirts. Or having an itchy crotch. Or Brooke. Or maybe he wears drawers under his kilt? Inquiring readers need to know!
Anyway, I really dug the book. It was fast-paced, funny, the characters were well drawn, and I've been there with Brooke's initial predicament. Read it, people!
