Amazon.com The question most asked about Caribbean travel is: which island? The Caribbean, by National Geographic Traveler, helps answer that question and most others as well. Packed with all the great photography one expects from National Geographic, it also offers the cultural details and perspective of a history book, plus relevant logistical information on hotels, restaurants, and activities. How rare to get both the "big picture" (so to speak) and essential small stuff, such as the fact that gas stations on St. Barts are closed on Sunday. The island maps are crisp and beautifully detailed, and some highlight driving and walking tours. Essays are sprinkled throughout, covering topics such as Caribbean cruising, coral reefs, and cricket. The book profiles each island by region, providing an excellent overview both for first-time visitors and travelers who want to explore beyond the resort beaches. --Cynthia Penney

nice for dreaming, not great for planning May 14, 2007 if you just want to get an overview on which region with in the carribean offers what it is a nice coffee table kind of book. when you want to make any actual plans you need another book with facts though.
excellent guide & pictorals March 26, 2007 this is the 3rd book in this travel series I have bought & find them excellent sources of information. They are easily organized into colored tabbed sections for handy & quick reference and their travel tips are always appreciated. I enjoy learning some of the history of the country, also.
Inspiration As Much As Information March 16, 2006 If you're a fan of their monthly magazine, then you know what to expect from a National Geographic travel guide; magnificent photography and interesting reading. As with all of the pubs in this series, "National Geographic Traveler: Caribbean" is a pleasure to flip through and provides a great historical background for the various points of interest. While Fodor's and other sources tend to provide more exhaustive logistical detail (where to stay, what to eat, who to call, costs, etc.), a read through a National Geographic guide is more likely to give you the itch to actually go.
great for pictures April 3, 2003 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm taking a cruise of the southern caribbean so I bought Frommer's Caribbean Ports of Call which is excellent except there isn't one picture so I got this book to supplement it.It includes a walking tour and map of San Juan, PR plus 15 pages of the rest of the island. The pictures are fantastic for the rest of the islands, except St. Maarten. This book does not include Bahamas. Phone numbers are listed for sports and activities on each island. Hotels and restaurants are listed in the back.
