Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory. Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame. Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?

Great for Gym Water Bottle July 22, 2008
Convinient size for gym and car. Easy to clean. Wish it was THERMOS, so it would keep water real cold at the gym and would not drip condensed water on the outside. Otherwise, its great companion to the gym and in the car.

The kanteen itself is really nice, but the loop broke off the stainless cap the first time it took a bump. I'll try the all plastic cap and see if it is more durable because I do like the canteen.

I have purchased 2 of these bottles (27 oz. and 40 oz.) for my children who are high school athletes. They really like them. The 40 oz. is a little large to comfortably hold, but the 27 oz. holds just a little too little for hot weather use. The sports cap is annoying for my son, so he unscrews the cap to use. they are thicker steel than some of the others and haven't had any dents yet in 1-2 months daily use. Very happy with my purchase.
 disappointing water bottle July 21, 2008
I purchased this bottle after the plastic water bottle scare came out. I read the reviews of how great the water tasted and no smell. When I received the bottle, I washed it by hand and let it air dry. When I smelled the empty bottle, it had an odor to it and I can't get rid of it. It's hard to describe the odor but it's almost like an (industrial) oil smell. I should have returned it but it's just sitting on my counter top collecting dust.
