Sturdy tool for the novice September 8, 2008
Used this on Hesperus on my first climb. Won't ever climb without one and converted my dad - a long time climber. BUT other reviews had it right - this is NOT meant for the climber who is really hard on tools. The rubber base ended up with the steel bottom breaking through it and the round cap came off. The tension coil spring was AWESOME! and we both (at various times) liked the adjustable height option. I would not only recommend it -I plan on getting another!

At first glance I was delighted to receive the Hammers HP1 as a gift. The carbide tip and snow cap was a nice feature. The screw on camera mount is a great add on. The attached thermometer and compass are more of the toy variety and should never be considered serious gear. I found that the aluminum pole was actually too light. Nevertheless, on my first outing the product did not live up to its billing. Upon extending the pole, the bottom section literally fell off. The company gladly accepted my return for a working model. Upon receipt of the replacement pole, I gave it to my 12 year old nephew. I on the other hand, continue to use my 20 year old poplar wood hiking pole and military surplus compass with great pleasure.

It is realy amazing to have a walking pole and a monopode to hold my camera right there when I want to take that picture. I do a lot of trekking in the Mountains of Santiago area, Chile, and this pole is a very good companion. Forget about those little tripods, where you don't find a place to set the camera. This trekking pole is all you need. I'm very happy I bought this pole.

What some of the previous reviewers have said is true, the locking mechanism is counterintuitive, it turns in the opposite directions of the markings, but that being said, this is a great item. Just got it and took it on a 6 mile hike. Its light weight, I feel safer walking with it and for the money you can't go wrong. I am glad I bought it.

Bought two (one for each of my two sons). We went on two hikes totalling 11 miles. One pole was used for two miles with no problems. The other pole was used for all 11. The basket fell off this second pole within the first half-mile of use. After screwing it back on multiple times, my son finally left it off. Good starter poles, but not for serious hiking.
