To open it form either side (the gate is designed to swing both directions), simply slide the lever at the top of the gate with your thumb and then lift up. Closing doesn't require any hands at all: the gate will automatically shut and lock behind you, providing extra peace of mind. Summer Infant's strong, all-metal safety gate can be pressure or hardware mounted and is able to fit in almost any standard doorway. Since one 5-inch and one 10-inch extension kit come with each gate, the device can be securely fastened in openings measuring from 28 inches to 47.5 inches wide. A notch at the bottom of the gate (and the included extension pieces) means the device can even be placed on a wall with baseboards. Very good buy... May 9, 2008
I liked this door alot. The only minor problem was that my 5 year old had trouble opening it for awhile. I wopuld like to purchase anther one in the near future.

I have one at the basement stairs and two others upstairs at the top and bottom of the stairs. If I didn't LOVE these gates, I sure wouldn't have 3 of them. My kids are always in the 97-100% range for height. When my first was I'd say 3yrs. old he has been able to open the gate by him self to let him go and come freely while still keeping up for younger children. I wouldn't want the kind with the pedal because then my kids would be able to open the gate a lot earlier by themselves than with this gate, plus you can't use the pedal kind of gates when you are coming down the stairs and the gate is at the bottom of the stairs. This is a strong and secure gate.

I bought this because we just adopted a yorkie puppywho learned now to scale the smaller gate we had. This gate is sturdy, and tall enough to keep her from climbing over it, and strong enough to not open when she throws herself against it. The only problem I had was that because she was so small, she was able to get in between the bars. I solved this problem by purchasing a sheet of white pegboad, cutting it to fit and attaching it to the gate. It works perfectly, and because I bought white pegboard, it looks alright.
Great Doggie Gate April 10, 2008
I bought this gate to keep my dogs out of the living room and from running out the front door. We've been using a cheap wooden thing that fell down all the time and was horrible. I wanted a gate with a door so we wouldn't have to step over it. I didn't want a pressure held gate, but the description for this one said it could be also be hardware installed. I don't know why they say that because there was no hardware in the box. I installed the gate myself (handy female!). It was easy and pretty fast. Just read the directions and you shouldn't have any problems. The pressure holds it up very tight. It would take alot to knock it over. The latch is flimsy, but you do have to lift the door up to get it open, which gives it added security. All in all, I really like this gate. But, I do think it is better for dogs than it might be for kids.

I purchased this gate for my puppies, not for a child. It works great! The dogs are sequestered in the space I have chosen and I can move freely throughout the house. The gate was very easy to put together and install. It opens very easily even by young children and it self-closes. This gate looks good and is very stable, especially considering that I do not have it installed in a doorway, but in a wall space. The design is cut in to accomodate the baseboards. Everyone that has been in my home asks where I purchased this item!
