4 out of 5 stars Reliable, range could be better   September 27, 2008
There are 2 main components of this system: the transmitter and the dog collar. The transmitter emits a radio signal that's picked up by a receiver in the collar. Whenever your pet goes too far, the collar device first produces some warning sounds, then administers the dog an electric shock. The intensity can be controlled, on a scale of 1 to 6. You also get a bunch of flags that are supposed to be visual clues for the dog during training.

I titled this review 'reliable' because we've had one of these transmitters for about 4-5 years and, after we plugged the transmitter in and set the range to the 'max', never had to revisit it. As for collars, we started with one, for one dog. We had to replace it after a couple of years because it stopped working. Since then, we bought 1 more because we have 2 dogs now.

To make it short, on our 2 puppies, we had no need to study the manual, plant little flags or any other training clues. Our training lasted about 30 minutes. As soon as they got zapped a couple of times and learned to associate the warning tone with 'run toward the house', they were fully trained. End of story.

My issue problem with this system is the range. Yes, I know, that I can buy 2 transmitters and therefore extend the range a bit but, at these prices, I can't afford to do this. All I wanted was to be able to extend the range from the current about 70-80 feet all around to maybe a 120 feet radius around the transmitter. Somehow, I think this should be quite possible.

Oh, the new collars require the somewhat expensive but a lot easier to install PetSafe batteries. Buy them from Amazon if Amazon proper is selling them (no shipping charges on $25 orders) and you will be paying about half anyone else is charging - remember, everyone else is going to add shipping charges and maybe sell taxes.

5 out of 5 stars Why did I wait so long to buy this?!!!!   September 17, 2008
I purchased the Petsafe wireless dog containment system from a seller on Amazon. I wish that I had not taken so long to do so. It has been a Godsend for me. My 2 dogs, a Bearded Collie and a very hyper Lab were very easy to train and are staying put in my yard. I have been able to keep their collars set on only the 2nd setting. I have had only one problem with it. The switch to turn it on and off is directly under where the electric cord attaches to the power jack. I accidently loosened the connection once while turning it on and did not notice that the red light was not on. While outside with the dogs, I was wondering why they were suddenly getting brave and going beyond the area I had chosen for them. I went inside and saw what had happened. I now always make a point of checking to see it has a good connection and that the light is on. I am looking forward to being able to take the system with me when I travel with my dogs or if I should ever move.

5 out of 5 stars stress saving!   September 14, 2008
Love this!

Using it on one of our dogs on open ag land. One of our dogs seems to think all the neighbors love having her visit several times a day. This as put a stop to her social networking around the community.

Set it up, put it on level 2 (lowest shock) and she acted like she had a flea bite ... moved it up to level 4 and figured it out pretty quick. I used it on myself, .... not my neck just my hand .... not as horrible as I was afraid it to be. Hummmm ... makes me think other uses and applications, a handheld remote for mom, for kids and toys? husbands and chores? That will get me their attention. ha ha just kidding.

For the dog it works great! Easy to set up, easy to train the dog. They figure it out real quick. Takes that stress off of me always looking for my spunky social dog, and keeps me receiving phone calls and emails from that ONE neighbor who hates dogs!

1 out of 5 stars Inconsistent & unreliable boundary   August 25, 2008
After 2 hours of trying to set up the unit and establish the boundary, we gave up. We would get the collar to beep at a one location, then go back to the same location and it wouldn't beep. We changed the position of the transmitter, changed the battery in the collar, reset the transmitter - all futile. We even had the transmitter sitting out in the middle of the driveway (no cars around) with direct line-of-site to the collar and it was not consistently able to beep at the boundary. No way I would trust this for my dog's safety, not to mention confusing the heck out of her. And to top it off, I bought it from a place (not here on Amazon) that is going to charge me a 20% restocking fee.
