The best newspaper in Florida February 18, 2008 For years my coach and I debated the various merits of Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel, South Florida's other major newspaper. I took the side of the Sun-Sentinel when I first began following current events. Looking back, it's embarassing that I even took part in the debate. The Herald is very clearly a better paper. From the looks of it, Sun-Sentinel takes the cake. It has sharp color photos, a cleaner print and better graphic layout than the old-fashioned Herald. There may even be a stronger sports section, as is common with mid-tier dailies.
But in regard to foreign affairs, breaking national stories, analysis and even the Arts & Entertainment section, the Herald easily rises above any competition in the state (inclusing the Orlando Sentinel and St. Pete Times). There are more original articles, lengthier columns and a serious attitude toward hitting the nail on controversial stories. Since subscribing to The Herald, there are columnists I miss from the Sentinel. Mostly Tom Jicha, Michael Mayo and one or two others. Still, the Herald has strong writers of its own, most notably Dave Barry. If you want a serious, in-depth look at the news, get the Herald. If you're looking for sports, cupons or just brief summaries from the AP, the Sentinel will work just fine. There is no significant price difference, though I believe the Sentinel now boasts greater circulation.
