5 out of 5 stars Last week decided to give Christian Science Monitor another chance because felt it was great paper   June 11, 2008

Was born and raised in non observant Roman Catholic Family and still I'm exploring this of my life. Feel pretty much I feel I'm more agnostic then any other. It was hard to read at 1st because somehow I never finished reading the previously one when the next one came, when I 1st started subscribing to it. Now, I think its going to be better then the 1st time.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Science Monitor   August 9, 2007

First some background - if you are confused by the title, Christian Science Monitor is actually a newspaper that comes out 5 times a week, not some sort of a religious periodical. You can also choose to get it once a week on Fridays. The Christian Science Monitor has political, environmental and other news related to the U.S. Then there is also in-depth coverage of world issues.

The reasons I give this magazine 5 stars are:

-Unbiased and informative news coverage
-Christian Science Monitor offers independent news as compared to the entertainment information and other attention grabbing headlines that get passed as news now a days.

You can go to the Christian Science Monitor website also and get one free issue sent to you so you can see how you like it. I highly recommend Christian Science Monitor.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful National and International Reporting   January 15, 2007

While the Monitor has been pared back in recent years (going from 24 to 20 pages), its reporting continues to provide powerful insights in a format that's unparalleled in American papers.

What do you get? A weekday daily delivered to your mailing address. The news is fresh, but only has limited coverage of the information on heavy circulation at CNN or the like. The focus is national and international stories, and the reporting is just that, stories. Sure there are sections with bulleted items of top news behind the cover, but that's not the focus, everyone sees and hears those bullets on the nightly news or elsewhere. In addition to topical news, you also get detailed book and movie reviews, and one of the best and most diverse opinion pages going.

The focus isn't telling you that violence is occurring in such and such a place or that some massive new government program is starting, but why the violence is happening including background on historical conflicts or what other alternatives were considered for the government program and which constituencies are taking which positions on the government program.

You'll have to find your local news elsewhere, but if you want to understand world events, there is no better vehicle than the CS Monitor.

5 out of 5 stars Best investigative reporting   April 12, 2006

5 out of 5 stars got local news?   July 24, 2004

The CSM is rightly respected for its international news coverage. I get the NYTimes in the office but read the Monitor at home because it gives me insights I just don't get in the big-boy papers. But what most people don't realize is that it's an incredibly good resource for ideas that can be applied at the local level. Their reporters have a knack for finding out what's working in everything from rural environmental protection to urban business trends, and I've sent articles or copies of the paper to politicians, ministers and priests, school teachers, corrections officers, business owners, and just plain neighbors--because the ideas or program or approach to problem-solving that worked somewhere in Oregon or Ottawa could work in my locality. A highly recommended news source.
