A Cultural Icon August 25, 2008 Landfall is New Zealand's oldest literary journal. Published twice yearly, Landfall features writing from known and unknown New Zealand writers, though most of what is published is from "world famous in New Zealand" writers. Editorial standards for Landfall are high, making this a quality journal, if not exactly cutting edge. For newer, more progressive writing I recommend Takahe published by the Takahe Publishing Collective and edited by several talented New Zealand writers. Despite being a bit staid, I always look forward to receiving my copy of Landfall in the mail because of writers like Ian Wedde who brilliantly intertwined a story about the life of his Rhodesian Ridgeback Victor, with a bit of history of dogs in New Zealand, and dogs in literature to create the essay "A Morning Walk" which I've returned to read half a dozen times.
Landfall publishes short stories, poetry, essays and art. Once a year the journal sponsors an essay competition focused on New Zealand culture and publishes the winner. The journal is gorgeous-a combination of a paperback and a glossy. Art is presented in full colour. You'll keep your copies of Landfall on your shelf for years. If you enjoy the bits of New Zealand culture glimpsed in Flight of the Conchords - The Complete First Season or the brilliant writing and wit of Taika Waititi in Eagle vs. Shark, I recommend going a bit further into New Zealand culture and subscribing to Landfall.
If you're put off by the 3-6 month wait for this journal, it can be sent directly from the University of Otago.
