Love this set...but it's not for acne. April 6, 2008 This skin care set comes in a beautiful deep purple velvet bag and I thought the sizes were very generous. I bought the set 3 months ago and still have plenty left. The set comes with 2 cleansers, Lime Blossom Cleanser and Purifying Cleansing Gel. The Lime Blossom Cleanser is a creamy cleanser with a wonderful uplifting aroma. There is no lather and it leaves a slight oily residue on the skin which should be removed with the Balancing Lavender Toner. I tended to use this cleanser in the morning and used the Purifying Cleansing Gel at night. The Purifying Cleansing Gel does lather and has a wonderful minty aroma. I exercise after work so the cleansing gel really made my skin feel fresh and clean. I fell in love with the cleansing gel only to find that it's been discontinued :-(. Apparently, the only way to get it now is in one of the sampler sets. Both of the cleansers do an excellent job of cleaning without drying the skin. There were times when I forgot to moisturize my face after cleansing and I couldn't tell because my skin did not have that tight feeling.
The Balancing Lavender Toner smells wonderful and does an effective job of cleaning the skin and removing any residue. The Absolute Day Cream feels wonderful on the skin and makes my skin super soft. I noticed reduced shine throughout the day which is almost impossible for my skin since it is so oily. Of course, this has not been tested during the heat of the summer when my skin is at its oiliest so I'll have to see how it holds up.
The reason for the 4 stars is the other two products in this set, the Absolute Day Cream and the Herbal Mask. I do like the Herbal Mask but it's a bit perplexing. This has more to do with my expectations of what a mask should do rather than with the effectiveness of the product. It smells wonderful and it also manages to tone the skin without drying. It's perplexing because I put it on my skin and it was almost like putting lotion on my skin. It never dried. If something is going to be on my face for 5 to 15 minutes, I expect to see something changing. Nothing happened. I washed it off and other than my skin feeling soft, I didn't really see a difference. I really want to use it more but the only thing I could think of to reduce the weirdness factor for me is to use it as a spot treatment. So now, I just dab it on the occasional blemish and it does a good job of drying it out. How? I don't know since it never really dries but it works. The Antioxidant Day Cream also works well but I cannot get past the smell. It is the strongest smelling product of the bunch and it is really strong when you first put it on. It mellows out after a while but I find the odor almost offensive. I can't quite put my finger on which essential oil is the culprit but my best guess is that it's the ylang ylang...which I have never been a fan of. So again, this is just a matter of personal preference. The product works fine and if you like the smell, that's just a bonus.
If I noticed one change in my skin from using this set it's that I have virtually no black heads now and my pores look smaller. I tend to get blackheads around my nose, cheek area, and jaw line. There are no blackheads around my jawline, the large pores around my cheeks are barely noticeable and the rough appearance of my nose from the blackheads is significantly smoother. Overall, I am very happy with the way these products have worked on my skin. My skin is softer, clearer, and looks so much healthier.
I have had oily/combination skin most of my life. Until a few years ago, I also had a moderate acne problem. I managed to remedy the acne mostly by making changes in my diet and cutting out the use of products with certain ingredients. I found that products with glycolic acid especially dried out my skin and made my acne worse. It's also a challenge to find products for oily skin that don't dry the skin out completely so I avoid most store brand skin care. I still get the occasional blemish and my oily/combination skin has persisted. So, there's proof right there that oil does not cause acne! The reason why I don't think this set would be good for someone with a persistent acne problem is that the only product that made any noticeable difference on my occasional acne was the Herbal Lavender Mask when I used it as described above. If you want something that will treat your acne and help your oily skin, you may want to get a set that includes the SOS cream.
