Fagor vs Presto July 24, 2008 I have a Presto 4 qt. pressure cooker which I like a lot, but wanted something bigger so I bought the Fagor 6 qt. The inside diameter of the Fagor is 8 3/4" vs 8 3/8" for the Presto, 3/8" difference which may not seem like much, but I cook mostly with stainless steel inserts, bowls and the like, to get the double boiler effect, and it's easier to get the bowls out of the Fagor, a tricky job when they are still hot. But the Fagor makes a hissing sound at a pitch I didn't like at all. So I went back to the Presto which makes a nice chuga-chuga sound with the little cap rocking back and forth, a sound I actually find pleasing (I'm a violinmaker, so sound matters to me). But then I found an old aluminum cooker at Goodwill, which I scavenged for the vent tube and cap, and installed it on the Fagor. Voila! A Fagor-Presto. It has the size I like and now the sound also. If you're not handy like that, I would go with the 6 qt. Presto, nice simple design, and that comforting sound heralding a good meal.
Nice June 23, 2008 The pressure maintains nicely without the old "jiggler". I wish it would have come with a rack and steamer unit.
NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S PRESSURE COOKER April 12, 2008 Though I am a pretty basic cook (I can boil water; scrambled eggs are my specialty), the fear that many people have of pressure cookers should be laid to rest with this Fagor. Once you get the hang of it, cooking is as simple as putting all in the pot, closing it, making sure the dial is pointed to "cook" and the lid snap is closed, putting it on the heat and wait for the little yellow bobbie thing to pop up so you can turn down the heat and start your timer. If there's too much steam this mighty device releases it safely. Even I can do it! Some foods are easier than others, but if you want to create a quick, healthy chicken soup, this is your weapon!
Parts keep breaking April 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We have bought this pressure cooker in Bed Bath and Beyond. In less than a year the lower part of the handle broke, and the replacement costs around $15. It is now about 3 years since we own this pressure cooker and the valve has broken and it will cost me another $16 to get a replacement part. I find it very annoying that such an expensive item keeps being costly over time. I guess it is great for Fagor to keep the money flow in, but they sell themselves as beeing "Green", and therefore they should not use parts purposedly made to break every year or two!!!! Other than that, all the nice things written by other reviewers are true.
Splendid indeed! February 8, 2008 This is an excellent pressure cooker! I bought another cooker before (not by Fagor) and returned it because it did not have manual pressure relilef. This pressure cooker has everything I need and is very fast. I tried several recipes and they are very good. Liked their beefstroganoff very much. My little daughter liked soups. Meat cooks really fast. I use this cooker very often.
